"The Heart of a Woman" is filled with unforgettable vignettes of famous people, from Billie Holiday to Malcolm X, but perhaps the most important is the story of Maya Angelou's relationship with her son. Because this book chronicles, finally, the joys and burdens of a black mother in America and how the son she had cherished so intensely and worked for so devotedly finally grows to be a man.

Maya's Notebook by Isabel Allende. The "New York Times"-bestselling author returns with a startling and surprising new book--a novel of suspense and a contemporary coming-of-age story narrated by an American teenage girl who falls into a life of drugs and crime and must escape before it's too late.

Maya's Notebook by Isabel Allende: “An explosive novel….Every character is enthralling….This is a boldly plotted, sharply funny, and purposefully bone-shaking novel of sexual violence, political terror, 'collective shame,' and dark family secrets, all transcended by courage and love.” Booklist (starred review)
Maya's Notebook: A Novel by Isabel Allende This contemporary coming-of-age story centers upon Maya Vidal, a remarkable teenager abandoned by her parents. Maya grew up in a rambling old house in Berkeley with her grandmother Nini, whose formidable strength helped her build a new life after emigrating from Chile in 1973 with a young son, and her grandfather Popo, a gentle African-American astronomer.

The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
Thornbirds, Worth Reading, Books Worth, Favorite Movies, Colleen Mccullough, Favorite Books
A Sweeping Family Saga - "The Thorn Birds" by Colleen McCullough- This is one of my all-time favorites. Also loved the TV mini series with Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward.
The Thorn Birds - Colleen McCullough I was raised Catholic and this book was SHOCKING! Much too adult for me to be reading so young.
“And gradually his memory slipped a little, as memories do, even those with so much love attached to them; as if there is an unconscious healing process within the mind which mends up in spite of our desperate determination never to forget.” ― Colleen McCullough, The Thorn Birds “There are no ambitions noble enough to justify breaking someone's heart. ” ― Colleen McCullough, The Thorn Birds
THE THORN BIRDS ~ what a wonderful saga. I couldn't put the book down. I later loved the TV series made from the book.
The Thorn Birds, the book was published in 1977 the mini series aired in 1983. Another book I would not have read if it hadn't been turned into a TV mini series.
Colleen McCullough The Thorn Birds My personal paperback has been read so many times that the thing has fallen apart! One of my first faves.
Great! It's also on my list of favorite movies (actually a mini-series). Intense love.

Fairy tales get reworked and re-imagined all the time, but the treatment Snow White gets in Helen Oyeyemi's novel Boy, Snow, Bird is more like a deconstruction of the tale than a mere retelling.
Boy, Snow, Bird: A Novel by Helen Oyeyemi, http://www.amazon.com/dp/1594631395/ref=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_sIp-sb10QCSS0
Boy, Snow, Bird: A Novel by Helen Oyeyemi. From the author of 'Mr. Fox.' A reimagining of the Snow White story set in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. #fantasy #fairytale
Boy, Snow, Bird, Helen Oyeyemi What: Just the latest in Oyeyemi’s incredible oeuvre, this novel is a loose and wild retelling of Snow White that investigates race, class, and the deepest kinds of identity. Why: Because it doesn’t hurt to look at life from the evil stepmother’s perspective every once in a while. #refinery29 http://www.refinery29.com/best-books-millenials-reading-list#slide-8
Boy, Snow, Bird Book by Helen Oyeyemi | Trade Paperback | chapters.indigo.ca "Oyeyemi''s writing is gorgeous and resonant and fresh . Charm is a quality that overflows in this novel, and it works under its best definition: as a kind of magical attraction and delight. Oyeyemi casts her word-spell, sentence by sentence, story by story, and by the end, the oppressive lair has opened up into a shimmering landscape pulsing with life." - The New York Times
Boy, Snow, Bird: A Novel by Helen Oyeyemi a slippery version of the Snow White fairy tale
Boy, Snow, Bird: A Novel: Helen Oyeyemi: 9781594631399: Amazon.com: Books (March 6, 2014)
Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi -Oyeyemi puts a midcentury twist on the Snow White tale. When Boy meets a charming widower and his beautiful daughter, Snow, she is determined not to become the evil stepmother, especially after the abuse she received from her own father. But then Boy discovers the real reason Snow's fair beauty is revered in her husband's family. This ambitious novel fearlessly tackles complicated issues like race and female competitiveness, even as it tells a fascinating story.
