    • Joseph Brooks

Flying Gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans) When alarmed, the flying gurnard spreads its large pectoral fins in order to frighten off predators. Despite its name, the fish cannot glide out of water.

Flying gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans) by Beckmannjan. When excited, the fish spreads its "wings", which are semi-transparent but tipped with a beautiful and phosphorescent bright blue coloration (designed to scare away predators; not gliding in the air like the fins of flying fish). The fish also has large eyes. It reaches up to 50 cm (20 in) in length and 1.8 kg (4.0 lb) in weight.

Tiny, spotted Bliny...they take up residence in empty barnacles or any hard little hole that protects them. The have some of the cutest, funniest faces of any of the fish underwater...but they are very small, and very shy. By liquidkingdom. #Fish #Bliny
