After reading The Mitten, sequence the story (using the printables on Jan Brett's website and glue the mitten on a brown paper bag to keep all their characters in one spot). Then write about an animal that could fit in the mitten.
Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive. This will be a clear example of what plants vs animals need to survive that also provides the students with visuals.
Grade 1 - Earth and Space Science- Daily and seasonal changes. Have them brainstorm words and ideas that go with each season. If the classroom is having daily weather updates have the students predict the next season
verb anchor chart You can hang this up in your classroom so that students always them when they may have issues reusing certain words a lot. This chart may give them an idea of a different verb they could be using.
