The Art of Happiness is a book by the Dalai Lama and Howard Cutler, a psychiatrist who posed questions to the Dalai Lama. I found it an excellent read, very interesting.
I remember reading this book by someone who interviewed the Dalai Lama, and its neat how many little nuggets of wisdom you can get out of this easy read. Its got a little of his philosophies, while also revealing some difficult life events, and how happiness can still be learned after all that hardship. books-worth-reading

CARTWHEEL Jennifer Dubois Loosely based on Amanda Knox's story in Italy, the book shows Lily Aymes, an American student on a scholarship in Spain who finds herself under arrest for the murder of her roomate. She claims her innocence but who really is Lily Aymes?

Cartwheel by Jennifer duBois. “College student Lily Hayes is an accident waiting to happen. While studying abroad in Buenos Aires, she becomes the prime suspect in her roommate Katy’s murder. DuBois’s haunting story captures a family shattered by their young daughter’s imprisonment. A well-written novel highly recommended for book clubs.” - Karen Kilbride, Hennepin County Library, Minneapolis, MN
Cartwheel By Jennifer duBois 384 pages In this edgy thriller inspired in part by the story of Amanda Knox, a squeaky-clean American girl in Buenos Aires is suspected of murdering her roommate–and then the twists and turns begin.

My Book List: Cartwheel by: Jennifer duBois
Book Review: 3 of 5 stars *** I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ***When ever a book opens with a disclaimer I am already curious. And this book has a big huge glaring one. “Although the themes of this book are loosely inspired by the story of Amanda Knox, this is entirely a work of fiction. None of the characters are real. None of the events ever happened. Nothing in the book should be read as a factual statement about real life events or people.”If I had never read that paragraph, I probably still would not know who Amanda Knox is. But I for one love a good did she or didn’t she do it, so I went into this book with an open mind and this is what I have decided. There is no doubt in my mind that Jennifer Dubois is an intellectual person and that she can write. Her characters are vivid and richly developed giving an opportunity to delve into the psyche of each one. They are multi layered and pull you into their internal debate. So while this book is loosely based on actual events it’s the aftermath that Dubois is writing about. The bigger picture of the actual event, the emotional struggle that each family member, boyfriend, roommate or acquaintance has to contend with to decide for themselves whether or not Lily Hayes is guilty. This story reminded me of watching the OJ trial. It was hard to not get sucked into the story. And parallel to the conclusion of that trial “Cartwheel” ends with no real resolution leaving you to decide for yourself what the verdict should be.Unfortunately I found this book to be pretentious or even ostentatious. At times it was trying to hard to be witty in dialogue or to show sophistication by bombarding us with vast vocabulary. The story became too bogged down by analytical rhetoric making me as a reader take the stance of “Lets get on with it”. With all that being said I think the book accomplished what it set out to do which is to put a human spin on the tale and give us a broader perspective maybe even a why behind the act. Lord of the Flies. Game-changer. I remember carefully making a homemade book cover for this novel... Out of various construction papers and stickers.
Lord of the Flies Hated it in high school; ironically, had to teach it to high school students...loved it as an adult -kh
Lord of the Flies - totally cliche I know cuz everyone has to read it in high school english class but it really just is that epic
“The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.” “We did everything adults would do. What went wrong?” While I was in high school, I read this book on my own to prepare for my New York Regent's exam because I had seen so many practice questions about the book during Regents review. I thought it interesting to see how things would be if a group of young boys "ran the world." I wondered if it would be the same if it were run by young girls.
Lord of the Flies - boy does seeing this bring back memories of reading it in high school
Lord of the Flies-one of my favorite books we had to read for high school

Hell House Book from the Author of I AM Legend, By Richard Matheson, 50 Scariest Books of All Time...there's a lot on this list I need to read!
Hell House, Richard Matheson It was tough to put Hell House above I Am Legend, but hey, the world is full of choices, and this writer finds haunted houses scarier than vampires. And, as Stephen King commented, “Hell House is the scariest haunted house novel ever written. It looms over the rest the way the mountains loom over the foothills.”
Hell House by Richard Matheson. I read this because I heard it was one of the scariest books written, but I didn't think so. I think it really depends on what your definition of scary is.

The Diary of a Young Girl is a book of the writings from the Dutch language diary kept by Anne Frank while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The family was apprehended in 1944 and Anne Frank ultimately died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. After the war, the diary was retrieved by Anne's father, Otto Frank, the only known survivor of the family.

The Diary of a Young Girl - Anne Frank. My favorite book of all time. I read mine til it fell apart.
The Diary of a Young girl is a very good and factual book. The book is the diary of jewish girl Anne frank, at the age of 13 years. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl - Anne Frank Challenged at the Culpeper County, Va. schools (2010). Initially, it was reported that officials decided to stop assigning the book due to complaints that it includes sexual material & homosexual themes. The edition published on the 50th anniversary of Frank’s death won't be used in the future despite the fact the school system did not follow its own policy for complaints. J.D. Salinger: The Catcher in the Rye book cover THE CATCHER IN THE RYE is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days.
Since his debut in 1951 as The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield has been synonymous with "cynical adolescent." Holden narrates the story of a couple of days in his sixteen-year-old life, just after he's been expelled from prep school, in a slang that sounds edgy even today and keeps this novel on banned book lists.
It's pretty much a high school reading requirement now, but this book is still one of my top all time faves. Scary how I used to relate so well to antihero Holden Caulfield!
Since its publication in 1951, 'The Catcher in the Rye' has been a focal point for censorship. One of the most recent attempts to remove it from a school reading list was in 2009 at the Big Sky High School in Missoula, Montana.
Since its publication in 1951, 'The Catcher in the Rye' has been a focal point for censorship. I've never understood parents wanting to ban this book from high school libraries and literature reading lists. Whenever I've asked many of them if they're read it, they say no, "but I've heard a lot of negative things." The story of a troubled teenager, Holden Caulfield, "The Catcher in the Rye" is on my list of books I read every few years. Like many fans of Salinger, I try and keep the popularity fires burning!
