The prairieHouse™ is not based on a romantic vision of the American Landscape, but the reality of what we have made. A Texaco station canopy is retrofitted for inhabitation, with living spaces tucked up safely under the broad shading roof, and a tall-grass prairie on top. Re-use and re-purposing of this ubiquitous, nearly invisible, and soon-to-be outmoded structure is a most basic form of recycling, and one that has greater impact than many active “greening” strategies.

Specht Harpman - Filmmaker's Residence In order to create spacial distinction and material continuity in a relatively small space, Specht Harpman wrapped this pre-war apartment with integrated cabinetry and installed Asian-inspired partial walls with translucent panels to separate space while allowing in natural light. The cabinetry allows the filmmaker and his wife's extensive book and film collection to be simultaneously concealed and revealed throughout the two-bedroom apartment.

The Weston Residence nestles in a valley adjacent to the Saugatuck River. Interior and exterior spaces are joined through views, portals, and material continuity. A glass-backed fireplace provides an elegant surprise. Like other glass houses, the landscape becomes the decoration for the rooms, playing with transparency during the day and reflectivity at night. Photo: Taggart Sorensen
