South Carolina designated the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) as the official state reptile in 1988. Loggerhead sea turtles are listed as threatened with extinction, partially due to destruction of their nesting habitats. They make an extended migration between their feeding grounds and rookeries, and South Carolina has some of the most pristine nesting areas for loggerhead sea turtles on the eastern coast.
The Green (Sea) Turtle is an Endangered Species, even though it is now protected throughout most of the world. Threats to the species include illegal hunting, habitat destruction, pollution, and accidental entanglement in fishing lines. Green Turtle @ Sipadan by lndr, via Flickr
Every sea turtle has markings as distinct as fingerprints on their shells. In an attempt to save the turtles from slaughter, rescue groups are etching their shells with tools that 'ruin' them for collectors. YEA FOR THE TURTLES!
