Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Americanah, is half social commentary and half love story, following a young woman, Ifemelu, who decides to move back to Nigeria from the U.S. to be with an old flame. With the story split between Nigeria and the West, Adichie adroitly explores the complexities of racial politics unique to Africans abroad.

On my "to read" list. -Fearless, gripping, at once darkly funny and tender, spanning three continents and numerous lives, Americanah is a richly told story set in today’s globalized world: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s most powerful and astonishing novel yet.
I LOVE Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie! And no, not because of Beyonce's song 'Flawless'. I felt at home reading the tales of her character, Ifemelu (a SHEROine in my eyes) as she navigated love, race, career, family, friends, and religion in Nigeria and the US. Ms. Adichie's novel Americanah is so refreshingly modern and nuanced. I can't wait to see and read more from her.
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, http://www.amazon.com/dp/0307271080/ref=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_KGLJrb0RF8X4X
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This witheringly trenchant novel scrutinizes blackness in America, Nigeria and Britain.
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: In this vibrant and rich novel, an Igbo woman struggles to define herself - is she a foreigner or national, black or African, lover or professional, Nigerian or Americanah? Adichie is a highly gifted storyteller - Amy Henry, aka Amy Cabernet Quilts
"Americanah" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This was such a rich story-- I loved the authors voice. It's a love story above all, but also provides an in depth commentary on cultural differences and what it means to identify with one culture while transitioning into another. ...Adichie tells the new immigrant African experience in America, and how it differs from the experience of African-Americans in humorous, no-holds-barred prose. Lightly cloaked as a novel.

13 Nonfiction Books must peruse this list for K, non fiction is where she stands firmly. Why? The crap fiction made to read in school. She rebeled, just could NOT get behind soppy fiction they think kids should read. She was reading the National Geographic in Kindergarten....actually, started summer before, as soon as I taught her to read, speak/enunciate (language disorder) . First month in Kindergarten she went to computer lab, and wrote a poem. An AMAZING POEM. About herself, preK..

Mrs. Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children- This book def. brought goosebumps to my skin. I loved every minute of this story.
Mrs. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Strange book that gets a little juvenile in the last quarter, but entertaining read. Weird. LOVE the photos inside.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs--I saw this in the book store the other day. The photos are AMAZING!! I am just not sure that I would enjoy the story. But, I am so intrigued that I may just read it after The Flannery O'Connor bio I am into now. So interesting.
This is the sort of cover that stops you dead in the book shop. 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' is a also a title that grabs your attention. And the photos inside Ransome Riggs' book add to the mystic of the story. Unfortunately, after a great start, it fails to deliver on that promise for me. Still a superb cover though.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Worth reading.

Young Adult Historical Fiction: 5 Novels to Try, never read them myself but I have always enjoyed historical fiction
This is a blog suggesting five Historical Fiction novels for young adults. The books are Hattie Big Sky, Taking Off, The Luxe, Out of the Easy, and Ten Cents a Dance. The unique part of these books is that they focus on uncommon events/people in history such as prairie life, the Challenger, taxi dancers during WWII. The books offer a different take on approaching history through literature.

I enjoyed this book. It is a book of essays. She discusses feminism (obviously), gender and sexuality issues, race, entertainment, politics, etc. Some will hit home more than others depending on your experiences, beliefs, passions, etc. No matter what, it will make you think. She also refers to a vast array of literature which has now made my "must read" list even longer. ~A.S. #2015readingchallenge #badfeminist #goodreads

Rad American Women A-Z: Rebels, Trailblazers, and Visionaries Who Shaped Our History . . . and Our Future! by Kate Schatz, Miriam Klein Stahl
This is the only alphabet where A stands for Angela Davis and Z stands for Zora Neale Hurston—and you haven’t learned it, yet. Writer Kate Schatz and artist Miriam Klein Stahl have radical ambitions to amplify your vocabulary of women’s history with their new children’s picture book,Rad American Women A-Z.
In a new illustrated children's book from City Lights press, "Rad American Women A-Z" teaches children the fundamentals; ABC's and feminism. The book, written by Kate Schatz and illustrated by Miriam Klein Stahl was inspired by Schatz's two year old daughter. Her plan in writing the book was to fill the “feminist-shaped hole in children's literature,” and goes from A (for Angela Davis) to Z (Zora Neale Hurston).

Feminism Is for Everybody: Passionate Politics: bell hooks --- Sacrilege Alert: Didn't like this book! Boring, not well written or very informative/specific, and if feminism is for everybody, then it doesn't make sense to prescribe such a narrow box for what a feminist must be.
I consider bell hooks to be a feminist success story because she has made me believe in feminism. Upon finishing Feminism is for Everybody, I truly believe that there are ways I can make a difference in the feminist movement. Her ideals are simple, straight-forward, and consistent.

Rubyfruit jungle by Rita Mae Brown. Bawdy and moving, the ultimate word-of-mouth bestseller, Rubyfruit Jungle is about growing up a lesbian in America--and living happily ever after.
Rubyfruit jungle / Rita Mae Brown I think I read this one for a women's lit class. It's a coming of age story about a high school girl discovering her sexuality and realizing that it's different from the so-called norm. It's got a very innocent point-of-view to let in even the most homophobic reader.
