San Juan de Ulúa

Fortaleza de San Juan de Ulúa. Fortress of San Juan de Ulúa. Veracruz, Mexico. Built in 1565 to protect Veracruz, the most important port under Spanish rule. It was protected by 250 cannons, moats, parapets and 3 ft (1 m) walls It was the last bastion of Spanish power in Mexico. It was also used as a prison. The most famous prisoner was Jesús Arriaga (known as Chucho el Roto) who escaped from the prison in 1885.
