An Ode To Unaccelerated Reading. I am not a fan of AR or SRC (Scholastic Reading Counts). I love book club and authentic discussion v. reducing a book to a set of banal, multiple-choice questions that don't inspire kids to be passionate readers.. Glad someone else shares my opinion :)

Can't ignore the others, among them The Joy Luck Club and The Hundred Secret Senses. But this is my fave Tan.

Daughter of Fortune, Isabel Allende. I'm glad I have this book, so I can read it again. On every level, Allende writes a gritty love story — for the people, for the history and the places.

"That's why whenever people try to tell me how their 'insane father' would sometimes fall asleep on the toilet, or occasionally catch the house on fire, I put my finger to their lips and whisper, 'Hush, little rabbit. Let me give you perspective.'"

Michelle Moran, I have not been disappointed by one of her books! Highly recommend for historical fiction.
