1700s: Angelique du Coudray's fabric womb Angélique Marguerite Le Boursier du Coudray was an influential, pioneering midwife. In 1759 the king commissioned her to teach midwifery to rural women to reduce infant mortality. Du Coudray invented the first lifesize obstetrical mannequin, called “The Machine”. Various strings and straps serve to simulate the process of childbirth. The head of the infant mannequin has a shaped nose, stitched ears, hair drawn with ink, and an open mouth, with tongue.
Angélique-Marguerite du Coudray was a famous 18th century midwife and designed this fabric womb with a 7 months old fetus to teach midwife trainees about delivering babies. Louis XV learned of her expertise and asked her to set up courses throughout France. From 1759-1779 she traveled the country with her design and published her Abrégé de l’Art des accouchements (Abridged Art of Child Delivery).

Common plantain - Tanchagem (Plantago major) - Snake weed as is used in snakebites. "Medicinal" herb tea: For colds and flu use 1 tbls. dry or fresh whole Plantain (seed, root, and leaves) to 1 cup boiling water, steep 10 min. strain, sweeten. Drink through the day. 2) Healing salve: In large earthen pot cook 1lb. of entire Plantain plant chopped with 1 cup lard covered on low heat. Strain, cool and use for burns, insect bites and skin problems. Used also as night cream for wrinkles.
Plantain is definitely one of my favourite healing herbs for cuts and stings, and it grows everywhere!
