For draft-legal triathlon races, one has to be able to absolutely master bike control at breakneck speed. This principle comes first and foremost for those triathletes who do not come from a cycling background. Joining road races will be a good idea to build on the handling skills.

Definitely agree on using core muscles for swimming, but for triathlon, it may be more prudent to drive the shoulders as the primary technique. Triathletes obviously still have to bike and run after the swim, so it would not be wise to burn too much core muscles during the swim portion. Perhaps focusing on arm cadence would be the most beneficial for a triathlon swim.
