Today, I went with a friend to a quiet village in the mountainous area of Nara prefecture, Asuka Mura. Time seems to almost be standing still there. It’s so peaceful and tranquil, although it's a bit spruced up for today's tourist according to my friend who was last here 15 years ago. When there where no omiyage shops etc. The entrance to Asuka-dera (飛鳥寺) in Asuka Mura Village in Nara! It is widely accepted as the oldest temple in Japan.

This is the Amakashi ni Imasu Shrine (甘樫坐神社), an old shrine dating back to 6th century. Empress Suiko (推古天皇), the 33rd Empress of Japan, is thought to have lived in this area for some time before moving to the Imperial Palace of Owarida. An ancient ritual, Kukadachi (盟神探湯) or “Trial by Ordeal” was held here in olden times. Emperor Ingyō (允恭天皇) was the 19th emperor of Japan.

Today, I visited Asuka Village one more time. The weather was perfect for a warm spring day. I left early in the morning and drove to the village and then went a round by bicycle. It was so much fun! This is the entrance to the Tachibana-dera Temple (橘寺) in the rural village of Asuka. I like this ancient village with its more than 1500 years of history. Hope you can make it out there once….

While in Asuka Mura, I came across this little shrine with a small pond surrounding it. A stone slab lays across to enter the shrine. This little shrine is a stone trow from the former Ruins of Toyura Temple (豊浦寺) and 2 stone trows from the Amakashiniimasu Shrine (甘樫坐神社). It’s called the Nanba Pond (難波池) and it has some history attached to it.

My first destination in Asuka village was to climb the 148 meter high hill of Amakashi-no-Oka (甘樫丘). There are two observation points and some nice walking paths that link these two. There are many maple trees on this hill, I’ll come back this coming fall for that. Pictured here is the Miminashi Yama (耳成山).

This is the “Asuka Great Buddha -飛鳥大仏” statue inside the main hall of the Asuka-dera (飛鳥寺) in Nara. According to pamphlet you receive at the entrance, it is the oldest Buddha statue in Japan. It was cast in 609 AD by Kuratsukuri no Tori (Also known as Tori Busshi-止利仏師) by request of Empress Suiko (推古天皇) and Prince Shōtoku (聖徳太子).
