Yesterday I ventured out to the Backcountry Trail for a Tempo Run. I struggle with these workouts tremendously. I have a hard time running at a 5-K+ pace without actually being in a race setting. In a race I tend to tuck in behind someone running around a 7-minute mile then kick it in a little at the end. I find it hard to pace myself at that speed, especially with out the help of adrenaline. The plan yesterday: 1.5 mile warm up/1.5 mile cool down at 9:00 pace, 3 miles Increased speed at 7:30 pace. Unfortunately that is not how it happen. 1.5 mile warm up - 13:32 – Nailed 1st mile increased pace – 7:26 – Yeah, feeling good! 2nd mile increased pace – 8:14 – What, I am way off. 3rd mile increased pace – 8:00 – Alright, today is not the day! 1.5 mile cool down – 14:15 – I will take it at this point. I guess there is always room for improvement. Today will be an easy 5 mile day, then time to hit the weights! Next week I will start half marathon training. I have 13-weeks to train until the Half in my area. I have a good base and feel this is the next step. I am going to try using the Runners World Smart Coach App. My goal is come in under two hours. We will see!

Everything Happens For a Reason: Fitness Motivation
"The hardest step for a runner is the first one out of the front door." Still true. Probably always will be. I thought that once I'd been running for awhile, it would get easier to motivate myself. Not true. I still find it hard to get out and start running! Last Saturday I was supposed to do 8 miles, but I woke up with a headache, so I put it off until later. Then I had so much to do around the house. I did some spring cleaning. I did laundry. I browsed the internet. Finally it got to the point where it was 4pm, and if I was going to get my run in, I had to leave! I only did 6 miles instead of 8 because in addition to the headache, I had developed a terrible knot in my back (it actually got better while I was running!). It wasn't my greatest run, but at least I got out there and did it, even if I got a super-late start. This weekend I scheduled myself to do 10 miles. I really needed to run a long distance because it's the last weekend for a long run before I start my taper for the Cherry Blossom 10-miler. I knew I had to get my run in on Friday, because Saturday is Alicia's wedding and I'm leaving for Cancun on Sunday. But when I woke up, I was lazy. I didn't feel like running right away, so I did other things on my to-do list. I did some laundry, I cleaned, and I took my online Pharmacology exam. Before I knew it, it was late afternoon, and I still hadn't run! I considered putting it off till the next day and running the morning before the wedding, but I just didn't know when else I'd be able to find the time for it. Plus, I looked out the window and it was a GORGEOUS day- and I'd spent all of it inside! I decided to go for it, even though it was past 5pm, which meant I'd be running the last few miles in the dark. OMG! It was so worth it. I had an awesome run. I felt great the whole time. The weather was beautiful, even when it started to get dark. All of the stressfulness of these last few weeks before Spring break started to melt away. I felt fast. I felt like a runner. I can't even tell you what I was thinking about for most of the miles, because I was "zoning" (my made-up term for being in the zone so much that everything is thoughtless and natural). My face got salty with sweat and still my legs didn't feel tired. I kept waiting for the wall, and it never came. It was the best 10 miles of my life (okay, I've only run that distance twice). I'm so glad I ran! But man, was it hard to get started. I probably took thousands of steps on my run today, but I can say without a doubt that the hardest one was the first one out the door.

I have so many fun races coming up! Each race comes with its own training plan. With these races spread over the next year, what races do I train for officially? In the immediate future, I have the Diva Half marathon on Sunday, and then the San Diego Rock and Roll Half Marathon. I committed to do the San Diego Half long before the Diva, so I have been following the SD training plan. Coincidently, the SD plan has me do 12 miles the weekend of the Diva, so it fits into the plan very nicely. My fall race training is what I am not sure about. I have Disneyland September 2nd, the Diva Long Island October 7th, my most anticipated race of the season—Nike San Francisco Half on October 14th with Team in Training, then Hershey Half October 22nd, then finally Disney Wine and Dine Half November 10th. Official training for Disneyland started on May 1st. Official training with the Team starts in mid-June for Nike. What plan do I follow? My plan is to jump right into the Jeff Galloway training plan for the Disneyland half as soon as I get back from San Diego. Since I will already be trained, after DL, I plan to follow the Team plan until Nike, and then jump into the Jeff Galloway plan for Wine and Dine. What do you think of my plan? Have you ever worked overlapping training plans? How did you mesh the plans together? A dream is a wish… --Amy
