A pair of #tulips watch the sun rise over Wisconsin, by #PhilKoch #photography
My dad taught me about these when I was a child. From previous pinner: Not every cloud has a silver lining; this multi-coloured cloud looks as if a rainbow has formed high in the heavens. The phenomenom - called a sundog - happens when ice crystals appear in clouds and refract the sun's rays. Photographer Robert Arn captured the cloud in Heyworth, Illinois, America. Growth of fungus, Paecilomyces cicadae (Eureka Prizes) This ascomycetous fungus is an endoparasite of underground cicada nymphs. Infection begins when ingested spores germinate and invade the nymph, inhibiting protein synthesis (by cordycepin) and replacing internal organs with mycelia. At maturity, the fungal fruiting bodies (stromata) grow from the killed host and produce white spores.

An underwater creature that seems to be smiling -- but is pinned as "15 Surprisingly Dangerous Animals"
Puffer Fish - A family of primarily marine and estuarine fish of the order Tetraodontiformes. The family includes many familiar species, which are variously called pufferfish, balloonfish, blowfish, bubblefish, swellfish, toadfish, toadies, sugar toads, and sea squab. Pufferfish are generally believed to be the second most poisonous vertebrates in the world, after the golden poison frog. Certain internal organs, such as liver, and sometimes the skin, are highly toxic to most animals when eaten.
Osmia Avosetta are solitary bees that build their nests by biting petals off of flowers, flying them back one by one, and gluing them together often using nectar as glue. Each nest is a papermache work of art that houses a single bee egg.

Tornado in Namibia. Storms - Severe Weather - Mother Nature
Update: This was labeled as a tornado, but other pinners say it's actually shadow on a sand dune. Older post: Amazing weather. Tornado in Namibia. National Geographic. Several photos
Tornado in the desert of Namibia. When the last of my babies is grown and leaves the nest I plan on indulging a craving for a particular adventure: stormchasing. As long as I can remember I have had dreams about tornados, and while the personal, close-up encounters leave me with a great deal of reverence and cautious respect, they have also imparted an abiding hunger to chase. I always thought it would lead me to a summer adventure in the midwest for a couple of weeks, chasing with a professional storm team. Seeing this photo my horizons have suddenly expanded. I don't know how frequent this occurrence is in a place like Namibia, and it certainly looks a great deal more ominous, but it's inspired a deep curiosity to learn more. Thanks to Jenn Smith for helping me discover the terrible beauty of this unexpected treasure and potential future adventure from photographer Francesco Middei of National Geographic Italia. -- Eve.

Golden Ray Migration - by Sandra Critelli - “It was an unreal image, very difficult to describe. The surface of the water was covered by warm and different shades of gold and looked like a bed of autumn leaves gently moved by the wind. “It’s hard to say exactly how many there were but in the range of a few thousand.“We were surrounded by them without seeing the edge of the school and we could see many under the water surface too.
I love stingrays! Golden Ray Migration by Sandra Critelli: The Gulf of Mexico population of Golden Rays, in schools of as many as 10,000 migrate biannually between western Florida and the Yucatan, turning vast areas of blue water to gold. Measuring up to 7ft (2.1 metres) from wing-tip to wing-tip, Golden rays are also more prosaically known as cow nose rays. They have long, pointed pectoral fins that separate into two lobes in front of their high-domed heads and give them a cow-like appearance. Despite having poisonous stingers they are known to be shy and non-threatening when in large schools. via telegraph.co.uk http://tinyurl.com/3furwbl #Golden_Ray #Photography #Gulf_of_Mexico #Yucatan #Sandra_Critelli
