Natalie Wood She was a child actress who effortlessly pulled off a transition to adult fare, and delighted all she met along the way. LIFE followed her at the Cannes Film Festival in 1962, where the 23-year-old Wood remained her charming self even as the paparazzi "pursued her like jackals": "At a party given by the Russian delegation, Natalie, the daughter of Russian emigrants, delighted her hosts by conversing fluently in their language and even joining in folk songs." Rare photo of young Natalie Wood that I won at an auction on E-Bay a few years back. I would say it came from the 1950's era but could be wrong.
Natalie Wood ~ On a movie set she fell into a river and almost drowned when she was 9 years old. This left her with a permanently weakened left wrist and a slight bone protrusion, which, for the rest of her life, she hid with large bracelets. Regardless of the movie role, or anytime that she was out in public, she always wore a large bracelet on the left wrist. She was named "The Most Beautiful Teenager in the World" by Life magazine in 1956. Her death was kismet, as she always afraid of water.

Natalie Wood - my mom wanted me to be Natalie (after this beauty), but she already named her two boys Matthew and Patrick (Matt and Pat) -- her friend said, NO WAY --- you can't have Matt, Pat, and Nat. So, she named me Maria - after Natalie's character in Westside Story. Now you know. Lovely woman!

"Once upon a time, there was born into a Russian immigrant home, the most astounding, breath taking girl. She had eyes like brown velvet but deep and magnetic. She giggled, she smiled, she grew into a youngster with an incredible intellect and capability of correctly understanding people in situations. Press, critics, co-stars, studio heads agreed she was a star, her parents from middle class, gave up everything for her, knowing she would bring something special to the world. This wasn't me, this is my sister." Lana Wood
