Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden: Such a beautifully written book about life as a geisha and the sacrifices that these Japanese women had to make.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I have a hard copy version and just love it. Saw the movie after I read the book - of course parts of the book were missing from the movie especially the ending of the book. None the less, loved both! These are a FUN series to read!!

just started this series, i hate reading good books or even series and then when it's over not knowing what to read, so let's start a huge series :)

Love, love, love the Stephanie Plum books. Have read all of them but the last two but are working on them!

The Stephanie Plum series has kept me entertained for a mighty long time. Good book and a funny movie.

Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum is highly addicting and always entertaining! There are currently 18 books in the series. The first one is out in theaters Jan 27th! You should read the book first...

One For The Money... read the first 2 of the series and enjoyed them... will keep going!

One for the Money. I love all of the Stephanie Plum books. Read them all!

This is my absolutely favorite book series! Can't wait to see the movie.

Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum Series (18 Books)

Get this from a library! One for the money. [Janet Evanovich] -- Watch out, world. Here comes Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter with attitude. In Stephanie's opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity, and hydrocarbons are ...

On my 'read soon' list...

I have to confess, not my FAVORITE book. But then I red the sequel, Something Blue and it really pulled the two stories together nicely. So I did like this book in the end after all.

One of my all-time favorite books! Actually, I love all of Emily Giffin's books!

This book will get you hooked on Emily Griffin's writing style. She is AMAZING!

Not a fan of Darcy, but I loved the book. Movie was ok.

Love the book, movie was good too! Good Chick Flick

This book will get you hooked on Emily Griffin

Something borrowed- one of my favorite books.

Something Borrowed by Emily Griffin

Absolutely Great read! I could not put this down, and now I have read all 5 of Emily Giffin's books.....the movie did NOT do this book justice, From the New York Times bestselling author of Something Borrowed comes a novel that shows how someone with a ‘perfect life' can lose it all—and then find everything. Darcy Rhone thought she had it all figured out: the more beautiful the girl, the more charmed her life. Never mind substance. Never mind playing by the rules. Never mind karma. But Darcy's neat, perfect world turns upside down when her best friend, Rachel, the plain-Jane “good girl,” steals her fiancé, while Darcy finds herself completely alone for the first time in her life . . . with a baby on the way. Darcy tries to recover, fleeing to her childhood friend living in London and resorting to her tried-and-true methods for getting what she wants. But as she attempts to recreate her glamorous life on a new continent, Darcy finds that her rules no longer apply. It is only then that Darcy can begin her journey toward self-awareness, forgiveness, and motherhood. Something Blue is a novel about one woman's surprising discoveries about the true meaning of friendship, love, and happily-ever-after. It's a novel for anyone who has ever, even secretly, wondered if the last thing you want is really the one thing you need.

Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil by John Berendt (cover photo from a Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia) [on my "to read" list :)]

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (John Berendt) One of my favorite books. Kevin Spacey did a wonderful job portraying Jim Williams in the movie.

Bonaventure Cemetery -- Savannah, Georgia (featured on the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt.) -- She is known as "Bird Girl" and was sculpted in bronze by Sylvia Shaw Judson in 1936, and was originally commissioned as a garden sculpture for a Massachusetts family. An 8-year-old model named Lorraine Greenman posed for the sculpture. "Bird Girl" stands 50 inches tall.

Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia. Made famous in John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the cemetery is a romanticized reflection of changing views on death & dying in the Victorian era.

Kite Runner -- can't believe I didn't already have this on here!http://pinterest.com/danaharrison/books-worth-reading/#

"The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini ~ One of my favorite books. Quite depressing but it keeps you on your toes & makes you want to read more.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. A moving, inspiring story set in the Middle East. Hosseini writes with a tear-jerking fervor. If this isn't on your bookshelf, grab it. You'll be glad you did.

The Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini): my favorite book int the Will-tear-your-heart-out-and-rip-it-into-1,000-pieces-but-put-you-back-together-again Department

The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini - The Kite Runner tells the story of Amir, a young boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, whose closest friend is Hassan, his father's young Hazara servant. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of Afghanistan's monarchy through the Soviet invasion, the exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime.

Khaled Hosseini's novel, The Kite Runner, about Afghanistan pre-Soviet invasion is one of the most eye-opening and enlightening books I've ever read. The intense emotion and detail that is recounted by the young boy, Amir, about growing up in Kabul is shockingly remarkable. Admittedly, I didn't know much about Afghanistan's history before and after reading this book, I'll never look at Afghanistan in the stereotypical, western-world view again.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a powerful and haunting book about secrets people keep and the profound impact of guilt over past actions. It also illustrates that taking action, however late, and sharing the secret appropriately can bring relief. It is also a story about the changes in Afghanistan from the monarchy to the invasion of the Russians and then the stranglehold of the Taliban. It is a clear reminder of how critical it is that church and state must be separate.

The Kite Runner-Amazing book! Waiting for another one to come out.....

Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. On my reading list.

Intriguing and beautifully written. I couldn't put it down.

The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood (1985) In 2008, in Toronto, a parent formally complained about the use of this dystopian novel in a Grade 12 English class at Lawrence Park Collegiate. The parent said that the novel’s “profane language,” anti-Christian overtones, “violence” and “sexual degradation” probably violated the district school policies that require students to show respect and tolerance to one another.

The Girl Without a Name by Sandra Block www.mannyyoung.co.uk

In what passes for an ordinary day in a psych ward, Dr. Zoe Goldman is stumped when a highly unusual case arrives. A young African American girl, found wandering the streets of Buffalo in a catatonic state, is brought in by police. No one has come forward to claim her, and all leads have been exhausted, so Zoe’s treatment is the last hope to discover the girl’s identity. When drugs prove ineffective and medical science seems to be failing, Zoe takes matters into her own hands to track down Jane Doe’s family and piece together their checkered history. As she unearths their secrets, she finds that monsters hide where they are least expected. And now she must solve the mystery before it is too late. Because someone wants to make sure this young girl never remembers.

The Girl Without a Name by Sandra Block My rating: 4 of 5 stars I have come to expect nothing less than: 1. A superbly written book 2. Great plot 3. Grabbing me from the start of the first chapter 4. Keeping me from being distracted from 'real life' I didn't get all of this though. more from the penmanship of Sandra Block She has become another one of my favourite authors where I long for her next book each time I close the one before. This was let me down a little We have a young girl here who is in a catatonic state wandering the streets. Police bring her into the Psychiatric ward. Its proving to be an unusual case. They name her Jane Doe. Zoe who is doing the Investigation becomes obsessed with finding out about Jane Doe. We also get to learn more about Zoe, she has ADHD, we find out her love interests and we find her behaviour is a bit OTT. Dr. Berringer who is treating Jane Doe has a significant problem himself. He is on probation for substance abuse, and I just couldn't wonder why constantly how is still operating as a doctor. Everyone who knows him knows this. We met Zoe in LITTLE BLACK LIES which I absolutely adored. And I know this is a stand alone book, but too much about Zoe was written in this book which just became a little tedious at times. It seemed to reiterate a lot from this authors last book about Zoe. That is my critique on this. However the book does redeem itself because of the Jane Doe story. And apart from me skipping a lot about Zoe it did hold my interest other than that so if I ignore what I knew and remembered from LITTLE BLACK LIES about Zoe I can honestly give this 4 stars and I would like to thank the author and Grand Central Publishing via Net Galley for my advanced copy. I have to say, I absolutely love the cover. Another gripping pageturner featuring psychiatrist Zoe Goldman, the protagonist from Little Black Lies. In what passes for an ordinary day in a psych ward, Dr. Zoe Goldman is stumped when a highly unusual case arrives. A young African American girl, found wandering the streets of Buffalo in a catatonic state, is brought in by police. No one has come forward to claim her, and all leads have been exhausted, so Zoe's treatment is the last hope to discover the girl's identity. When drugs prove ineffective and medical science seems to be failing, Zoe takes matters into her own hands to track down Jane Doe's family and piece together their checkered history. As she unearths their secrets, she finds that monsters hide where they are least expected. And now she must solve the mystery before it is too late. Because someone wants to make sure this young girl never remembers. The Girl Without a Name is a powerful novel of memory and forgetting, of unexpected friendship and understanding...and of the secrets we protect no matter the consequences View all my reviews

My all time favorite book

The Good Earth-Pearl Buck

Title: The Good Earth Author: Pearl Buck Genre: Historical Fiction Synopsis: This novel tells the story of Wang Lung, a Chinese Farmer, starting with his marriage and leading all the way to his final days. Wang lung is able to rise up in the world from his humble origins to greatness and wealth all because of his hard work on the land. This book takes place before the Chinese Revolution and perfectly captures a time and place that no longer exists. Stars: 5/5 Lauren's Review: Obviously this book and author speak for themselves, she's won a Nobel Prize in literature, the novel won a Pulitzer Prize (and is even on Oprahs Book Club list! sarcasm). But somehow I had still never read it until now. I loved it. I think it's amazing that Pearl Buck is an American woman and she managed to perfectly describe the life of a poor Chinese farmer. I guess I probably never read it because I wasn't interested in the subject to be quite honest. Chinese history doesn't really get me excited like English history does...but it's possible that's just because I don't know enough about it. Buck opened my eyes to a totally new world. I strongly suggest reading this novel and reading about Pearl Buck's life as well, she was an interesting person.

The Hunger Games, Book 1 of the Hunger Games Series By Suzanne Collins... AWFUL. Boring, stupid, sci-fi, unromantic... Big NO-NO for me.

The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins #hungergames #suzannecollins #books

Hello bookworms!  First things first I want to say that I will not post any spoilers without a clear large warning sign! (This post has been exported from my (Clare) personal blog as I transition my reviews to here) The Hunger Games Series. By Suzanne Collins.  source Book one The Hunger Games. Blurb:  "In a dark vision of the near future, a terrifying reality TV show is taking place. Twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to appear in a live event called the Hunger Games. There is only one rule: kill or be killed. When sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen steps forward to take her sister's place in the games, she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature" (source) When I decided to read this I have to admit I was jumping on a bandwagon, It was everywhere, this young adult book that was "amazing" I was reeled in by the comments made on this and I was not left disappointed.  It's probably clear this has a target audience, young adults, and it's written simply but very well with a plot that reels you in to read this at rapid speed . (I couldn't put it down!!) and an ending that makes you want to pick up the second book there and then!  However, I personally think it has a message that the older readers can relate too, like government issues, sacrifice, love, freedom of choice, and not succumbing to the expectations of society.   I find it clever, captivating, brilliant and it tugs at my heartstrings. Everything I love in a good book. The action packed sci-fi type story line kept me gripped and the love triangle kept my girlie self happy.  I fell in love with certain characters, I have my favourites and my not-so-favourite and every time I re-read this book I find new things I had forgotten or even not registered the first time I read it.  So it's fair to say I am indeed a big Hunger Games fan.  (and yes I have seen and loved the film!) Suzanne Collins I salute thee and I give this book a 5/5 stars!
