Chicago writer Hugh Holton's sudden death was a shock, but I'm very glad to see this real-life good guy's work available in Ebook: "Author Holton, a 33-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, passed away in early 2001. Commander Larry Cole, Holton's literary legacy, is equal parts Dirty Harry and James Bond. Holton's intimate knowledge of Chicago cops and politics has always played a key role in his crime novels but never more so than in this one. Holton and Cole will be missed." Booklist

This powerful book recounts the failure of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton in an attempt to cross the Antarctic continent in 1914. The subsequent struggle for survival endured by the twenty-eight man crew for almost two years gives to book its title, as well as the name of the ship Shackleton used for the expedition, the Endurance. The ship was eventually crushed by ice floes, leaving the men stranded on the pack ice, where they drifted for over a year. Compelling.

Echopraxia, Peter Watts. It's the eve of the twenty-second century: a world where the dearly departed send postcards back from Heaven and evangelicals make scientific breakthroughs by speaking in tongues; where genetically engineered vampires solve problems intractable to baseline humans and soldiers come with zombie switches that shut off self-awareness during combat. And its all under surveillance by an alien presence that refuses to show itself.

32 Books That Will Actually Change Your Life ~ Hmm... Will I ever have time to read these?
A Brief History of Time | 32 Books That Will Actually Change Your Life Being that this is a book by Stephen Hawking, it isn’t the easiest in the world to read. That being said, it’s incredibly smart, and if you can manage to get past the first few chapters, you’ll start to see that the big message here is all about time, and that it has a clear direction. If anything, reading this book will make you feel a little closer to understanding the universe (i.e., it’ll make you smarter!).
