Adolf Eichmann awaits trial in Israel, 1961

Pictures of War: Photo

Martin Bormann, Jr. (1930 - Present) seen in uniform in 1939. This is the eldest son of Martin Bormann, Hitler's private secretary. Martin was a godson of Adolf Hitler. He has spent much of his life repenting for his father’s horrific actions, becoming a Catholic priest and serving as a missionary in the Belgian Congo. He has also joined with Jewish groups to make a pilgrimage to Auschwitz and traveled to Israel to meet Holocaust survivors.

'Hitler was descended from the Jews and Africans he hated' Adolf Hitler is likely to have been descended from both Jews and Africans, according to DNA tests. Samples taken from relatives of the Nazi leader show that he is biologically linked to the 'sub-human' races he sought to exterminate. Journalist Jean-Paul Mulders and historian Marc Vermeeren used DNA to track down 39 of the Fuhrer's relatives earlier this year. Hitler was 1/4 Jewish.

Want to see what hate looks like? Here it is - Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels, upon hearing that his photographer, Alfred Eisenstaedt, (famous photographer for Life Magazine,) was Jewish. On May 1st, 1945, when it became apparent even to him that Germany would lose the war, Joseph Goebbels gave poison to his six children, and then shot his wife and himself.

A dangerous woman in the most literal sense, Senior Sergeant Roza Shanina was a sniper in the WWII Soviet Army. She racked up at least 54 kills of German soldiers before her death from wounds at age 20. She served part of the time in an all-woman sniper unit. Before the war she worked as a kindergarten teacher.

Soldiers goose-step past the Führer in honor of Hitler's 50th birthday, April 20, 1939. Less than five months later, on September 1, the Third Reich's forces invaded Poland; on September 3, England and France declared war on Germany. The Second World War had begun.

The man in the much publicized Holocaust photo has been only recently identified as Rabbi Moshe Hegerman, the Rabbi of Olkusz in Poland. Brought to the town square for execution he asked to let him say first Kaddish for his slain brethren. The soldiers laughed while watching him praying and then killed him.

Rudolf Höss pitifully attempting to avoid the noose at Auschwitz. There have been accusations -made by those of less-than-stellar character - that Höss was tortured by the British before his trial. I hope they're right. There are occasions when deeds are so monstrous and vile that those who committed them deserve pain, and torment, and living hell before being given the mercy of death. Retribution and Justice sometimes are very nearly the same. Höss deserved much, much worse.

Eugene Jacques Bullard (9 October 1894 – 12 October 1961) was one of the only two black military pilots in World War I and warded the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor.
