The Hardy Tree in the churchyard of St. Pancras Old Church in London, hundreds of old gravestones circle an ash tree. In the 1860s an older part of the churchyard was designated to make way for a new railway line. Coffins were removed with care and reburied elsewhere. Some of the headstones were placed in a circular pattern around a young ash tree in the churchyard. Over the decades the tree has, inevitably grown and parts of the headstones nearest the tree have disappeared in to its growth.

See-through church, Limburg/Belgium. In 2011, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh revealed a construction in the rural landscape of Borgloon (Limburg, #Belgium) that’s based on the design of the local church. This construction consists of 30 tons of steel and 2000 columns, and is built on a fundament of armed concrete. Through the use of horizontal plates, the concept of the traditional church is transformed into a transparent object of art. (gijsvanvaerenbergh.com)

Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, a collaboration between young Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh, have built a see-through church in the Belgian region of Haspengouw. The ten metre-high church is constructed from 100 stacked layers of weathered steel plates. Gaps between these plates allow visitors to through through the walls. Entitled Reading between the Lines, this amaing church project forms part of the Z-OUT programme coordinated by the Z33 gallery, which aims to bring art into public space. Take a look! A Steel Church Stands Tall, But Almost Vanishes
Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, a collaboration between young Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh, have built a see-through church in the Belgian region of Haspengouw. The church is a part of the Z-OUT project of Z33, house for contemporary art based in Hasselt, Belgium. The church is 10 meters high and is made of 100 layers and 2000 columns of steel. Depending on the perspective of the viewer, the church is either perceived as a massive building or seems to dissolve – ...
Designed in 2011 by architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh, this surrealistic folly in the Belgian city of Borgloon is composed of 100 evenly spaced layers of steel that are stacked, to almost diaphanous effect, in the form of a nave and steeple. Inspired by local church buildings, the 30-foot-high structure was created as a longterm work of public art along a walking path

Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France
Notre Dame in Montreal - main altar of the Notre-Dame Basilica in the heart of Old Montreal. With the exterior modeled loosely on the famous Notre Dame de Paris, when the second tower was completed in the 1840s, the Basilica was the largest church in North America. Notre Dame de Paris or simply Notre Dame is the quintessential example of Gothic Architecture. Construction of the church started in 1163, when Bishop Maurice de Sully decided to build a cathedral befitting his status as the bishop of Paris. Notre Dame was completed some 200 years later - one of the first European cathedrals to be built on a truly monumental scale. A particularly striking feature of Notre Dame are its Rose Windows depicting scenes from the bible.

St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow... makes me think of a gingerbread house
St. Basil's Cathedral (Russia) Everyone who’s ever been to Moscow has almost certainly seen this cathedral. It’s located on the Red Square and named in honor of the wacky Basil, who dared to express to Ivan Grozny exactly what he thought of his tyranny. The architect who designed this cathedral was later blinded by order of Ivan Grozny, so he was never able to create anything more beautiful.

Constructed in 1880, Fort Sherman Chapel is Coeur d'Alene, Idaho's oldest church, school, library and meeting hall....what scarred me about that church...is that I only really knew like two people in it prior and although I have only gone those very few times...everyone wanted to tie everything I've done, and the person I was to complete strangers
