How much influence do teachers have over creating the next generation of scientists and engineers? "1 in 5 STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) college students decided to study STEM in middle school or earlier."
Looking at our future STEM needs. In the next seven years, more than a million jobs will open up that require specialized technology skills, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But there won't be enough qualified college graduates to fill them. Are we doing enough to get kids interested in math and science?

Flipping the Classroom - I really want to try this out if I do teach 5th or 6th grade, have some really great ideas especially if I get to have Edmodo! For ELA, would post grammar and vocab lecture videos, pose online reading discussions, and then in class would focus on small group discussions and reinforcing lecture concepts :D

Love this concept of the flipped classroom, this website breaks it down for you like a two year old..thanks Craig Perrier!
Some call it a "flipped classroom" others call it "reverse instruction" and often its empowered by information technologies that are termed "blended learning". Bottom line: work problems and discuss concepts with students in-class versus listen to lectures and read examples outside-class. Its also known as "adult learning", and the purpose is to improve learning, retention, and application of knowledge. This infographic summaries it nicely.
This is a great visual representation of the "Flipped Classroom" idea. Check it out!

Building bridges to better online education: Many institutions across the country are facing the increasing push to offer more and more classes in online environments. While this need grows, the same institutions face no funding to increase staff and to spur training for course developers and instructors. In the state of Arkansas, the Blackboard Users Group, called ARBUG, created a statewide program to recognize excellence in online courses.
