Decorating for Lunar New Year 🍊 is filled with meaning and blessings! These traditions have been passed on to us for generations and are full of symbolism.
During this time of year, we will decorate with a lot of red and gold! Red for luck and gold for wealth.
We will buy certain flowers to display to represent different meanings. You want romance in your life? Display peach blossoms. You want prosperity? Display pussy willows. You need strength? Time to buy some lucky bamboo! And the list goes on.
We also buy and give a lot of tangerines over the next few weeks as the word tangerine sounds like gold in Chinese! So if you’re visiting Chinese friends or family, give a basket of tangerines and they will appreciate your well wishes for good fortune!
We also display banners around the home especially around our doors! The banners will have blessings and auspicious sayings written on them. They come with a variety of styles but almost all will be gold and red. The blessings range from wishing safety for those who cross the thresholds to happiness for all who enter. You can pick and choose these sayings to display!
As you can see with these few examples, decorating your home for the Lunar New Year is much more than making the home beautiful! It’s rife with meaning and symbolism.
