Adapt for k. but look into this! Classroom Collective -- LOTS of great ideas! Weekly Morning Message - Use one morning message per week to teach grammar. Monday: Correct mistakes. Tuesday-Thursday, find vowel patterns, punctuation, contractions, compound words, parts of speech, etc. Friday: Circle the parts of a friendly letter.

once a week morning message idea- very manageable...great way to teach "begin with end in mind" and discuss what will be happening for the week.

more "getting to know you" activities for the first weeks

Have students do this weekly so they can learn to write letters as well as just basic writing strategies. This way you know what they learned. Model maybe 1st and 2nd week then have them do it every Friday before they leave for the week.

This friendly letter song would be a fantastic way to teach these skills and would fit with the habitat unit when students write a letter to an animal asking about its home.

Student of the day activity--I used to do something similar to this and haven't for a few years---BUT-- This is a GREAT thing to go with my Making Words lessons!
