One of my favorite school quotes. fair does not mean equal

  • Klarissa Tan

I think this was a great quote, especially when people often have the idea that people with disabilities get a unfair advantage with the assistive technology/ accommodations that they receive, especially in the classroom setting. The teacher or fellow peers may think that getting extra time or less work for one individual student is an injustice to the rest. This quote advocates for PWD and gives a diff viewpoint of the issue. PWD don't get an unfair advantage but levels the playing field.

This is special education...Some students need more than others to succeed. This is what you say when people say it isn't fair that special education students get extra stuff. I actually had a gen ed teacher say it wasn't fair that a special ed student got more time on an assignment. The student probably thinks it's not fair that he has a learning disability.

I would like to frame this and give it to my team members as a back to school gift. :-) Good Idea, Teaching Sisters.

Here's a poster defining what fair means in the classroom.
