Sewing thread crochet (no pattern) usually use a size 14 steel needle.. It's a pain doing the starting chain, but after about the 2nd row/rd, it starts "coming together". (By the way, you might want to turn the crochet hook sideways to see the actual "hook").

    I have my great-grandmother's hook in that size! I have used silk thread - after all, if it's that much trouble, make it WORTH that trouble. It went on a silk nightgown as a gift.

    One of my grandmothers crocheted an Irish crochet doily out of sewing thread. Have to admire the skilled needlewomen of that time!
