The Bell Jar - Plath was an excellent poet but is known to many for this largely autobiographical novel. The Bell Jar tells the story of a gifted young woman's mental breakdown beginning during a summer internship as a junior editor at a magazine in New York City in the early 1950s. The real Plath committed suicide in 1963 and left behind this scathingly sad, honest and perfectly- written book.

The Bell Jar: Sylvia Plath: Great novel about displacement, depression, mental health, non-conformism and mental health. Impossible to ignore the comparisons between the protagonist, Esther Greenwood and Plath.

Sylvia Plath (1932-1963)
I first began writing poetry when I was 16. I was at sixth form college; I was confused about my sexuality; and my perfectionist streak was reaching fever pitch as I studied for my A-levels. Although Plath's words are terribly sad to read (particularly when you consider the eventual outcome), I've found that my best work has come into existence when I've felt mentally beaten; because of that, Plath is a huge inspiration.

“I didn’t want my picture taken because I was going to cry. I didn’t know why I was going to cry, but I knew that if anybody spoke to me or looked at me too closely the tears would fly out of my eyes and the sobs would fly out of my throat and I’d cry for a week. I could feel the tears brimming and sloshing in me like water in a glass that is unsteady and too full.” ― Sylvia Plath
“I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in life. And I am horribly limited.” ― Sylvia Plath

Sylvia Plath 1932–1963; Gelatin silver print, 1959 (printed later) by Rollie McKenna (1918–2003)
A Pulitzer Prize winner, Sylvia Plath was a stunning impressive poet, novelist and short story writer. She was also the first poet to win this Prize posthumously, for her work "The Collected Poems". Plath received her education at Smith College and Newnham College, Cambridge before acquiring acknowledgement as a professional poet and writer. Though Plath had a blissful professional life, same was not the case with her personal life, which faced a lot of turmoil.
Sylvia Plath- She was a well-known poet who used several allusions to Classical mythology to add dimension and layers to her poems. She was included in the gallery because several of her poems gave insight to the way Classical tradition can transcend time to be used to relate the past to contemporary society. She used mythology with a unique twist in which she related her own experiences to different myths indicating the relationship the past can have with the present.
Sylvia Plath "“Dunque, d’ora in poi parlerò ogni notte. Con me stessa. Con la luna. Passeggerò, come ho fatto stasera, gelosa della mia solitudine, nell’argenteo livido della fredda luna […] Parlo da sola e guardo gli alberi scuri, beatamente neutrali. Molto più facile che affrontare gli altri, che dover sembrare felice, invulnerabile, brava. Senza la maschera, cammino parlando con la luna, con la forza neutrale e impersonale che non ascolta, ma si limita ad accettare la mia esistenza.”Diari

"I remember, as a 9-year-old, first reading Jane Eyre. I didn't like the love story but I liked the fright. The scene in which the meek governess of the title sits through the night, listening to her employer's mad wife rampage behind a closed door, is one of the most frightening in fiction." — Hilary Mantel, author of Wolf Hall and The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher.

On the reading list
It’s 1988, and Harrison, a happily married mother of three, takes a job with Head Start, working with at-risk four-year-olds. Her heart goes out to the foster kids; before long, she and her husband take state training and adopt two sisters. Five children make a big family, but Harrison finds it tough to turn her back on needy children. She and her husband start accepting emergency care “hot-line” foster children, too; soon, Harrison quits her day job and becomes a full-time-overtime, really-foster parent. In addition to a stay-at-home mom’s usual duties, Harrison is caring for children with serious emotional baggage and often complex medical problems. There are lawyers, therapists and social service people to meet with, plus the scheduling of visits to birth mothers, an emotional roller coaster for all parties. Birth mothers, she finds, are often “harder to hate than you might expect,” and when an especially difficult child comes along, it’s almost impossible to accept that even foster parents have their limitations. And how do you “give enough” to each child so they get a healthy sense of family, “without loving them too much to let them go in the end?” With over half a million American children in foster care today, Harrison’s personal but vitally important account should be read by public policy makers and by anyone with a spare room in their home.
