    Medieval drawing of Batu Khan, one of the most famous conquerers of Russia. Lived between 1207-1255; the founder of the Golden Horde. His state ruled Rus, Volga Bulgaria, Cumania, and the Caucasus for around 250 years, after also destroying the armies of Poland and Hungary. "Batu" or "Bat" literally means "firm" in the Mongolian language.

Excavated from Alar Cemetary Ruoqiang (Charqilik) The horn-shaped part of this hat was made from four triangular pieces of white felt that are rounded at the tip and the main part of the hat was made from blue broace with astately, lifelike designs o f clouds and geese done in golden yellow. The lining is white felt. the brim is decorated with fur.

    According to the Yuanshi (History of the Yuan Dynasty), Khubilai's wife Chabi designed a brimmed hat, at Khubilai's suggestion, to eliminate glare from the sun. In an imperial portrait, the emperor Wenzong (Tugh Temür, r. 1328–29, 1330–32) wears a brimmed hat with a string of hardstones as a decorative chin band.

    Yuan Dynasty. Brimmed hat. Fiber, wood, gold, and semiprecious stones. The tops of such hats are ornamented, and a string of hardstone beads serves as a decorative chin band, similar to that of the brimrned hat in the tapestry-woven portrait of Tugh Temiir. Height is 9.2 cm. Diameter of headband is 18c m. Outer diamter is 35 cm. Excavated from the Wang Shixian family tombs, Zhangxian, Gansu Province. Gansu Provincial Museum.

    By the mid 13th century, the Mongols had subjugated north China, Korea, and the Muslim kingdoms of Central Asia. Kublai Khan (1215-94 began his drive against the Southern Song. Kublai Khan had established the first alien dynasty to rule all China (1279-1368). The Mongols did use existing governmental structures, the language they used was Mongol, and many of the officials they used were non Chinese. Mongols, Uighurs from central Asia, some Arabs and even an Italian named Marco Polo

    Khan liked Marco, conscripting him into service for the Empire. Marco served in several high-level positions, including ambassador and the gov of Yangzhou. While the Great Khan enjoyed having the Polos as his subjects and diplomats, Khan eventually consented to allow them to leave the Empire if they would escort a princess who was scheduled to wed a Persian king

    The Naval Battle of Yamen is a turning point in Chinese history. The naval Battle of Yamen (simplified Chinese: 崖门战役; traditional Chinese: 崖門戰役) (also known as the Naval Battle of Mount Ya; simplified Chinese: 崖山海战; traditional Chinese: 崖山海戰) took place on 19 March 1279 and is considered to be the last stand of the Song Dynasty against the invading Mongol-controlled Yuan Dynasty. Although outnumbered 10:1, the Yuan navy delivered a crushing tactical and strategic victory, destroying the Song.

    14th Century Iranian Dalmatic. The pelicans depicted on the textile are more of an Italian embellishment where they were used as a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice. In opposition there is the flower scroll motif which is mostly associated with the Chinese influence of the time. Added to China and Italy, the experts have determined that the fabric from which the dalmatic is made must have been exported to Europe from Mongol-Iran from the structure of the cloth.

    Mongol women refused to adopt foot binding and retained rights to property and control in the household, as well as freedom of movement. Some Mongol women even went to war and hunted.

    The Golden Horde was a Mongolian khanate that was established in the 13th century and formed the north-western sector of the Mongol Empire. The khanate is also known as the Kipchak Khanate or as the Ulus of Jochi.
