DON'T PANIC — Hans Rosling showing the facts about population
Four and a half years of violent conflict have destroyed entire regions of Syria. Caught in the middle of all this horror are the children of Syria, relying on parents who have lost control of their own lives and are now being forced to make difficult choices in desperate circumstances.

A wounded Syrian girl stands in a makeshift hospital in the rebel-held area of Douma, east of Syria’s capital of Damascus, following shelling and air raids by Syrian government forces on August 22, 2015. At least 20 civilians were killed, and another 200 wounded or trapped in Douma, a monitoring group said, just six days after regime airstrikes killed more than 100 people and sparked international condemnation of one of the bloodiest government attacks in Syria's war.

One of the more disturbing reasons soldiers engage in sexualized violence against women is to promote solidarity among the soldiers, or “unit cohesion.” “[Unit cohesion is] a kind of nasty socialization in which soldiers find something terrible they have now in common." writes Lauren Wolfe, director of the Women Under Siege project.

Photo Credit: Scott Faiia "It is said that African women are responsible for providing 90 % of the water, wood and fuel needs of the household. To fulfil this task, they may have to carry water jugs that weigh as much as 70 pounds and walk 3-6 hours each day. The picture shows an Ethiopian girl from Wello carrying-out her daily task. But her beautiful Ethiopian smile promises that change is in horizon and better times are coming."
This young girl’s positivity is so inspiring! At Voss Foundation, we aim to help girls like her stay in school and grow to become empowered women. Monika Ettlin: Africa | Beautiful smiling Ethiopian girl, as she carries a heavy load of water home | © Peace Corps, via Flickr

Karrayu girl smiling, Ethiopia. The Karrayyu are a pastoralist tribe from Ethiopia living in the Awash Valley. Struggle for grazing lands and water resources is a constant and daily challenge for the Karrayyus. This results in conflicts with neighbouring tribes. Clashes between herders from these tribes are pretty common, and sometimes people even get shot. Unfortunately the Karrayyu are also famous for the female genital cutting the women have to face and suffer from. ©Eric Lafforgue

I love this photo - breastfeeding... one of the greatest joys given to both child & mother <3
This is a beautiful picture of mothers' strength and nurture.
I have a deep compassion for these third world mothers, their ability for sharing joy and warmth and love with their children in such a hard place is inspiring.
