For Whom the Bell Tolls. Ernest Hemingway. First edition, 1940, Charles Scribner’s Sons. War novel. American in the International Brigades is attached to a republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. “Today is only one day in all the days that will ever be. But what will happen in all the other days that ever come can depend on what you do today.” (Hemingway). One of my favorite books.
These books have been banned at some point in time and yet include some essential stories that I think make them extremely noteworthy. I own many of these and plan to encourage my kids to read at some point in their life.
A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go off your face. It is one of the few havens remaining where a man’s mind can get both provocative and privacy. ~Edward P. Morgan
