In 1898 Eric and Albin Swenson, the sons of Swedish immigrant S. M. Swenson of the SMS Ranches, purchased the 79,000 acre Scab 8 Ranch. The ranch was nestled in the communal corners of four Texas counties: King, Cottle, Motley and Dickens. The brothers renamed it Tongue River Ranch because of its location on the Tongue (South Pease) River.
Vaqueros went north with livestock. In 1598, Don Juan de Oñate sent an expedition across the Rio Grande River into New Mexico, bringing along 7000 head of cattle. From this beginning, vaqueros drove cattle from New Mexico and later Texas to Mexico City.Mexican traditions spread both South and North, influencing equestrian traditions from Argentina to Canada.
King Ranch - largest ranch in Texas with 825,000 acres (or 1,289 square miles) which includes portions of six Texas counties. King Ranch, founded in 1853 by Captain Richard King raises horses. In 2001, Ford Motor Company added a King Ranch edition to their F-150 truck line, complete with the King Ranch cattle brand in the logo.
