The Spicebush Swallowtail Caterpillar is one of the best mimics known. In its early stages it resembles a brown bird dropping and is found exposed during the day on leaves. After molting to the 4th instar the caterpillar turns green. Both the early instars and the later ones display the snake's head mimicry, with large spots on the swollen thorax giving the appearance of a snake's head. The spots look like eyes with a white highlight to simulate moisture. Photo Michael Hodge Flickr

This is called the Gooty Sapphire Ornamental Tree Spider (Poecilotheria metallica) and even its name is all fancy. They're insanely rare, too, only being found in a single location which is severely fragmented. The extent of occurrence is less than 100 km2. Habitat: Southeastern India and Sri Lanka Status: Critically Endangered
