This quote relates to the idea of equality versus equity and refers to NCLB policy. No two students learn the same so what makes two ESL students learn the same? NCLB enforces the first part of the quote, everybody gets the same thing. But this is not fair because no two students, including ELLs, learn the same way. Instead, NCLB should enforce every student getting what they need in order to be successful. That is the only way to make the education system more fair than it is now.

This is special education...Some students need more than others to succeed. This is what you say when people say it isn't fair that special education students get extra stuff. I actually had a gen ed teacher say it wasn't fair that a special ed student got more time on an assignment. The student probably thinks it's not fair that he has a learning disability. **As a parent this is what I need to get across to my kids when they start in with the complaining & guilt tripping......**

So true. I explain this to my students all the time. Think I will have to make a poster of this!

I would like to frame this and give it to my team members as a back to school gift. :-) Good Idea, Teaching Sisters.

    (G) "Classroom Rules" Have a discussion the first day about what it looks like to follow these rules. ie: be ready to learn- be in your seat, quiet and ready with all of your supplies and books you will need.

Freebie Classroom Community Building Poster The same theme applies at home to our homework area. Need to make something like this to remind my munchkins (and a reminder to us parents sometimes too).

Good advice for parents. Skip count with them. Practice time tables in the car. The more they know going into middle school, the more prepared they will be for algebra.
