Chincoteague Pony (Equus caballus), Common. Two herds graze freely on Assateague Island. Legend has it that the ponies arrived on Chincoteague from a Spanish ship that had run aground during a storm in 1750. Historians believe they are descended from horses brought by settlers in the 1600’s. Chincoteague ponies Wife lived on Main Street. IN the late 1960's I stayed there one weekend. Their homestead had an outhouse at that time. Late one night I went out in the dark across the boards to the "house". There were many pair of red eyes staring at me that about gave me a heart attack. It was a herd of ponies in the yard wandering through to the beach.
