Native Australian Fauna Human induced factors including over-hunting and over-fishing, destruction of habitats, introduced pests and diseases have seen the extinction rate of plant and animal species soar to several hundred times higher than what would usually be expected. Over 1600 of Australia’s native plant and animal species are threatened with extinction due to human induced factors. Work can be done to save many of them, but for some species it is already too late.
