Frida Kahlo de Rivera (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954; Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón) was a Mexican painter, born in Coyoacán. Perhaps best known for her self-portraits, Kahlo's work is remembered for its "pain and passion", and its intense, vibrant colors. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.
At the age of six, Frida Kahlo was stricken with polio. It affected her right leg.

Painter Frida Kahlo was the Mexican self-portrait artist and feminist icon who was married to Diego Rivera.
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who is best known for her self-portraits. Mexican culture and Amerindian cultural tradition are important in her work, which has been sometimes characterised as naïve art or folk art. Her work has also been described as surrealist. Kahlo had a volatile marriage with the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. She suffered lifelong health problems, many caused by a traffic accident she survived as a teenager. Recovering from her injuries isolated her from other people, and this isolation influenced her works, many of which are self-portraits of one sort or another. Kahlo suggested, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) Memory, 1937. In retaliation to Rivera's affair with her sister, Cristina, Kahlo stopped wearing Tijuana costumes & cut her hair. Beside her, in this painting, stand her alter egos: school girl clothes & Tijuana costume, both empty but equipped with 1 arm. Frida's arm, suggesting her impotence & her heart, huge because it feels too much, lie on the earth.
Memory (The Heart) - Frida Kahlo Fecha de finalización: 1937 Estilo: Arte Naíf (Primitivismo), Surrealismo Técnica: óleo Material: metal Dimensiones: 40 x 28,3 cm Fecha de venta: 1992 Precio de venta: $935.000 Galeria: Collection of Michel Petitjean Paris, France
I want so badly to be the kind of artist she was. She put everything she was into her paintings, her whole heart open and bare and said, "Here I am, this is me. I don't care if you like it." You can't look away!

Memory, the Heart, 1937 by Frida Kahlo - Frida was able to express her misery over the Rivera/Cristina affair two years later in a self-portrait entitled Memory, the Heart 1937. As always, she used bodily wounds to suggest psychic injury. Her face, though tearful, is expressionless. Her hair is cropped, and she wears the European-style clothes she favored when she was separated from Diego Rivera. Flanked by alternative identities - Frida herself stands armless and helpless.

I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it's true I'm here, and I'm just as strange as you. ― Frida Kahlo (Pictured here: the painter at age 18, by Guillemero Kahlo, 1926.)
