Hiram Ulysses Grant, more commonly known as Ulysses Simpson Grant, changed his name before attending West Point so as to avoid the initials of H.U.G. After his capture of Forts Henry and Donelson, the American public interpreted his new initials of U.S.G. as "Unconditional Surrender" Grant. His glory from the American Civil War would carry him all the way into the Presidency, however, his terms were greatly marred by corruption such as the Whiskey Ring.
