cut down a sheet of 1/4" plywood to window width size; nail above existing molding; add 3" crown molding; fill gaps with picture molding; caulk; prime and paint
Trick to faking thick crown molding. First, install a basic crown molding. Then, about 3 inches below the crown, install a decorative picture frame molding. Caulk the seams. Then paint the two trims and space in between with same color. Appears to be one large thick piece... Love!
Too Cute!!! Crown molding shoe rack! I did this. Bought one 8' piece of molding, cut it into 3 pieces, and spray painted them gold. Nailed them into the empty wall in the walk-in closet, and viola! Easy, cheaper than a fancy rack, pretty, and my shoes are off the floor. Also took no time, effort, or skill.
