The Borrowers is an award winning series by British author Mary Norton. This series is imaginative and creative as she delves into the hidden lives of tiny people that live in our walls set in England. The books are heavily British in style and prose which make it less accessible to children in the US. Written in the mid 1950s, these books reflect the social mores of the time, so keep that in mind when you read it. All in all, a great classic series. Good for ages 8 to 12.
Chapter Book: The Borrowers by Mary Norton
She learned a lot and some of the things she learned were hard to accept. She was made to realize once and for all that this earth on which they lived turning about in space did not revolve, as she had believed, for the sake of little people. “Nor for big people either,” she reminded the boy when she saw his secret smile.” ― Mary Norton, The Borrowers

Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina Based on an old Indian story, this is a tale about “a peddler, some monkeys, and their monkey business.” Created in the days when using colour in children’s books was extremely expensive, the four-colour folksy illustrations have retained their charm for more than 60 years.

IslandBlueDolphins 201x300 Top 100 Childrens Novels #45: Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott ODell
In the first grade, I got kicked out of class EVERY DAY. My punishment was being sent to the library for two hours while the rest of the class watched TV. I read this book and remember thinking that I knew exactly what Kira meant when she said: "The Island of the Blue Dolphins was my home; I had no other." That library helped me to understand that no matter what happened in my life, I could always find a home in good books.

~ Island of the Blue Dolphins ~ My favorite book in the 4th grade. Read it several times.
The children's book Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell was a popular book among younger boomers in 1960s. It was a tale about a young girl stranded for years on an island off the California coast.
