Reading this at the moment, it's very interesting in the way the author goes throughout England's long history weaving the story of five families through that history.

The Kitchen House !! I could not put this one down. The story of an orphan girl from Ireland who lives with the slaves on a tobacco plantation then moves into the big house where loyalties and betrayals collide.

Another one of my all time favorite books! When a white servant girl violates the order of plantation society, she unleashes a tragedy that exposes the worst and best in the people she has come to call her family. Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin. Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction. Lavinia finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds. When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare, and lives are put at risk. The Kitchen House is a tragic story of page-turning suspense, exploring the meaning of family, where love and loyalty prevail.

Jacob's only daughter is Dinah, revered and even spoiled by four mothers. The heritage of the Jews is told through the female. Thus, it is Dinah's lot to pass on the stories of her mothers and grandmothers for the next generation to revere. Mostly told in the "red tent" where the women go to have their female cycles, Dinah learns what is expected of a Jewish woman and her own rite of passage into Jewish womanhood. Dinah's love, leads to tragedy for her and a need to escape from her family.
The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters...
The ultimate "women power" read. Makes me wish I had my own red tent.
Such a fantastic book. Read it 10 years ago, love it to this day.
The first half was spectacular. And I'd like a red tent please.

This is my favorite book I read so far in 2014. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. A young boy struggling with the sudden loss of his mother becomes entranced with a small painting that draws him into the mysterious underworld of the art industry. Winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

The Goldfinch: A Novel (Pulitzer Prize for Fiction): Donna Tartt. Engaging story about the struggles of a young boy growing up in a world of dysfunction following a bomb blast in the Met where he loses his mother, meets an inspirational elder, first glances his life long muse and "steals" a painting. Sad and sobering and often "long' but a good read just the same.
