Reading this at the moment, it's very interesting in the way the author goes throughout England's long history weaving the story of five families through that history.

Another one of my all time favorite books! When a white servant girl violates the order of plantation society, she unleashes a tragedy that exposes the worst and best in the people she has come to call her family. Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin. Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction. Lavinia finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds. When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare, and lives are put at risk. The Kitchen House is a tragic story of page-turning suspense, exploring the meaning of family, where love and loyalty prevail.

Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that are about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons. Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood--the world of the red tent.
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. While I'm sure I would've been stoned to death for my Sassmouth during this time period, I loved all the women in this book.
Jacob's only daughter is Dinah, revered and even spoiled by four mothers. The heritage of the Jews is told through the female. Thus, it is Dinah's lot to pass on the stories of her mothers and grandmothers for the next generation to revere. Mostly told in the "red tent" where the women go to have their female cycles, Dinah learns what is expected of a Jewish woman and her own rite of passage into Jewish womanhood. Dinah's love, leads to tragedy for her and a need to escape from her family.
Such a fantastic book. Read it 10 years ago, love it to this day.
FABULOUS!!! ' Ft Eustis book club's first selection.

I didn't want to start reading this book for the singular reason that it would only mean I'd have to finish it. "New York" is another Rutherfurd book that should not be missed and if you haven't yet tried Rutherfurd, I would recommend him. His genre is historical fiction and no one does it better.
Great reading for those who like historical novels. This takes you from seventeenth century New York up to 2009. Rutherfurd does a great job with the flow of history, followin the Master family and those families the Masters were associated with.

This is my favorite book I read so far in 2014. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. A young boy struggling with the sudden loss of his mother becomes entranced with a small painting that draws him into the mysterious underworld of the art industry. Winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
"The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind....Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction."--Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Selected by Amazon, The New York Times, The Economist, The Washington Post, Barnes & Noble, Kirkus Reviews and Booklist.
for a book list: The Goldfinch: Donna Tartt:Composed with the skills of a master, The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity.
The Goldfinch: A Novel (Pulitzer Prize for Fiction): Donna Tartt. Engaging story about the struggles of a young boy growing up in a world of dysfunction following a bomb blast in the Met where he loses his mother, meets an inspirational elder, first glances his life long muse and "steals" a painting. Sad and sobering and often "long' but a good read just the same.
Now added to the reading list: "Congratulations are in order for Donna Tartt, whose 784-page book, The Goldfinch, a "beautifully written coming-of-age novel with exquisitely drawn characters," has just been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Raise your hand if you've read it." - Jezebel

This one got me started on SKP's books. I love historical fiction - found this for 5$ at a book sale and off I went. Probably my favorite book ever.
Sharon Kay Penman is my favorite author. She writes excellent historical fiction books that are thoroughly researched. Although sympathetic to Richard III, her perspective is compelling and in stark contrast to Shakespeare's Richard III.

Sharon Kay Penman is my favorite author. She writes excellent historical fiction books that are thoroughly researched.
