First grade teacher Carrie Fischer of Imperial, Missouri picks a first read aloud focused on names: During the first week of school, I read a book called The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi. After reading the book, each child takes their name home with a letter to their parents explaining the activity. Each child discusses with their parents how their name was chosen, and what follows are many art, literacy, and community building activities in class.

Great beginning of the school year book! Being new and from Korea, Unhei, is uncomfortable telling the kids at school her name, so she says she'll pick a name by the end of the week. The kids fill a jar with name suggestions, but they just don't seem to fit... what name will Unhei (Yoon-Hey) finally pick?

CHILDREN'S BOOKS: The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi What’s in a name, Shakespeare asked. For a child whose whole world is changing, the continuity of her own name may mean an awful lot. And friend who are willing to take the time to learn her name may mean even more. This is a great book about acceptance, friendship, and change.
