Vila - Any of a class of Slavic dryads, tree-spirits who are exclusively female. They are often vicious and cruel, and have a dire reputation; nevertheless, if one succeeds in approaching a Vila properly, she may be inclined to heal, give advice, reveal treasure, or teach magical and medicinal arts. A Ziegfeld Girl with her smoking boudoir doll. By the mid 1920s Europe and America were immersed in a ‘doll craze’. All smart women had to have a ‘poupee’ doll and they were seen everywhere. They were not played with but were decorative or used as an accessory and took many different forms with a huge range of styles and costumes.....bad dolly!

Paris, Shops Window, Boulevard De, Corsets Shops, Eugene Atget, Vintage Photo, Photography, Eugen Atget, Strasbourg
Jean-Eugène-Auguste Atget, French, 1857–1927, Boulevard de Strasbourg (Corsets), 1912, For almost three decades, the former actor Eugene Atget systematically, often serially, documented everything about Paris that seemed to be vanishing with the encroachments of modernization. Impeccably composed, with rich and varied textures and forms, his images range from unpeopled streets, parks, and monuments to cafes, street vendors, and shop windows. Rows of hourglass-shaped busts emerge out of darkness
Paris Hotel Boutique Diario --- vintage photo of corset shop
Eugène Atget: Boulevard de Strasbourg, Corsets, Paris, 1912 In Atget’s inventory of Paris, shop windows figure prominently and the most arresting feature mannequin displays. In the 1920s the Surrealists recognized in Atget a kindred spirit and reproduced a number of his photographs in their journals and reviews. Antiquated mannequins such as the ones depicted here struck them as haunting, dreamlike analogues to the human form.
Included in the upcoming exhibition: "French Twist: Masterworks of Photography from Atget to May Ray" at the Delaware Art Museum. Inspiration for "An Evening in Paris" party! Victorian Photo Booth - People still did the same poses during the Victorian Era, except you know, without having to use the sepia effects in iPhoto. Also, today I learned that some Victorians did have emotions.

Indian mother and child, 1905, Oregon You must teach your children that the ground beneath their feet is the ashes of our grandfathers. So that they will respect the land, tell your children that the earth is rich with the lives of our kin. Teach your children that we have taught our children that the earth is our mother. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of earth. If men spit upon the ground, they spit upon themselves. - Chief Seattle

Victorian Era Clothing for Women | Victorian Women
Mourning. There seems to be a lot of old photos of women hiding their face while in "mourning".
Victorian Mourning Jewelry History - The entire late Victorian era has been described as “the Cult of Mourning” where mourning entered social conventions, fashion and indeed infused most aspects of life. Mourning required strict protocol. The first year was full mourning, where only black clothing and jewelry was permissible. After that, half-mourning colors including gray, mauve and purple were suitable.
