yellow kitchen island, soapstone counters and sink
Your sink is the workhorse of your kitchen. It needs to take a beating but you want it to look good, right? Below you'll see some great kitchen sinks we've found. Adding one of these to your kitchen can really amp up the style. But before you buy, make sure the sink meets your needs: Farmhouse sinks are all the rage but because of their large size, they require a lot of water to wash a load of dishes. If you're all about water conservation you may have to use a small plastic tub inside your beautiful sink. Deep sinks are great for those large pots and pans and for platters. But for everyday dishes, they can put a strain on your back. Consider the finish of your sink and whether it meshes with your lifestyle. Copper sinks can easily stain with acids. Porcelain sinks can be scratched. Concrete can also stain. If you're meticulous you may not need to worry. But if you tend toward the more careless side, get a rugged, hard to scratch, hard to stain sink. Dishwashers do most people's daily dishes but if you like to wash by hand, be sure you have a thick-walled sink with sound deadening properties. It will hold in heat better and not bother the rest of the household with noisy clanging. If you yearn for an undermount sink, be prepared to install new countertops. Laminate countertops are not suited to undermounting. You'll need to go with granite, marble, or some other solid surface. Now that we have all those nasty practicalities out of the way, let's take a look at some awesome sinks! This modern looking sink can be outfitted with custom strainers and cutting boards. Go back in time with a classic deep and wide soapstone sink. This molded double sink is made of magnesium oxide, a green building material. Make a statement with a stone sink that is carved from a single chunk of stone. They're cheaper than you think! Concrete sinks can be made into almost any shape. Copper sinks take on a rich, dark patina as they age. This sink looks like it could belong in a restaurant kitchen. This sink, made from 85% granite and acrylic resin, is non porous, hard, naturally sound proofed and is resistant to heat, scratches, staining and chips. The color of the sink is throughout solid with UV resistant technology. Who says top-mounted porcelain sinks are outdated?! This playful copper sink adds style to any space. If you want your workhorse to look like the old fashioned farmhouse workhorse, consider finding a salvaged sink and having it reglazed. Source: Houselogic
Sometime in the neverland future when I have free time, I'd like to give my kitchen a little facelift. For the past few years our cabinets have been a buttercream color, with a matching kitchen island. I think I'd like to paint my cabinets a brighter white, paint my walls a cream color, and I'm really thinking about painting my island in a fun color like emerald green. Kitchens tend to lean towards the neutral palette, and a brightly colored island is a great way to experiment with colors. Here is a veritable rainbow of cool kitchen islands for your Sunday enjoyment- The warmth of the red adds richness to this upgraded country kitchen This persimmon colored island has so much zip and personality. Truly a beautiful space. Every time I see one of these antique store counters turned kitchen islands I covet them. I'm fond of my island, but if one of these came my way and wasn't $1000, it would be hard to say no. The beadboard, vintage style light fixtures, and open shelves make this kitchen feel like the world's fanciest farmhouse. The lemon yellow on the island balances the cool tones of the soapstone perfectly. I'm really into this kitchen island. It's so innovative and quirky. It was an interesting piece that had potential, so someone hiked it ip about 10 inches, added bold casters, and a delicious rustic top with overhang. This is exactly the color and finish I'd want for my kitchen island. Another beautiful emerald green island in a white kitchen. The green really pops against all the natural wood tones. A bright and cheerful kitchen with a handsome island in a fabulous shade of green here. This lime green island is a wonderful mix of modern and natural. The color is intense, but the marble top and rich deep wood floors help keep it grounded. A fantastic way to add color in a small kitchen. You can snag little tables like this fairly readily, and with a fresh coat of paint, you've got a very high end look. I think everyone has one of these antique oak dressers sitting around. With a coat of blue paint, this one has become an incredibly fresh and unique island. Want to make it feel right at home in the kitchen? Add a marble or butcher block top, handy hooks, and a towel bar! A lovely saturated shade of sky blue on this island is an unexpected and delightful touch in what appears to be a pretty stock kitchen. I didn't think I'd find any examples of purple kitchen islands, but my search yielded two that I just love. This one has built in baskets, a great wood top, and is absolutely perfect for this charming rustic kitchen. A fantastic plum color adds life and vibrancy, and just a bit of humor to this stunning country kitchen.
I'm so happy to be writing a blog post today! If you've followed me for the last few years, I'm sure you've noticed I haven't been posting nearly as often as I used to. But when I can squeeze in a new post here or there, it makes me happy! I've been working on several model home projects lately and have been searching for fresh innovative kitchen ideas to show our clients. Long gone are the days of granite counter tops and stained cabinets - although many people still gravitate toward this look and it can be pretty, I am seeing more and more truly unique kitchen designs that are way outside the creativity box. Here's a round up of several spaces that caught my eye for various reasons. What are you loving about kitchen design these days? [For all IMAGE SOURCES, CLICK ON EACH IMAGE]

Color-Coordinated Cabinetry- Selecting a different hue for upper and lower cabinets is a great way to help a small kitchen break out of its boxy mold. A sunny yellow keeps the wall cabinets in this kitchen feeling light and airy, while blue base cabinets anchor the room. A yellow island helps balance the color-blocking scheme. Painted crown molding takes the color scheme right up to the ceiling. Love this!
