Given our current drought situation in Southern California, THIS was the best year to take out our front lawn and put in native, drought tolerant plants.

Chaste Tree (Vitex Agnus-Castus) - Zone 5-9 Full Sun 15'-25' Height/Width. With 'true blue' clusters of fragrant flowers (although they can also be pink, purple, or white) this deciduous multi-trunk (with winter pruning) tree is great as: Single specimen in the lawn, In a row along a property line or a driveway with lower plants growing beneath it, or Small patio tree. Well-drained soil, very drought tolerant once established. Thrives in heat. Attracts butterflies & bees.

Vitex/Chase tree - I have these in my garden and they are wonderful and have  a mild lavender scent.  Easy to propagate too.

Vitex / Chaste tree -Grows well in Texas. Deer will not touch it, drought will not droop it and if it gets too tall you can cut it back hard since it blooms on new wood. Looks amazing mixed in with grasses and Knockout roses.
