Data Processing System, IBM 1620, total storage: 12.5kb. The IBM 1620 was announced by IBM on October 21, 1959, and marketed as an inexpensive "scientific computer". After a total production of about two thousand machines, it was withdrawn on November 19, 1970. Modified versions of the 1620 were used as the CPU of the IBM 1710 and IBM 1720 Industrial Process Control Systems (making it the first digital computer considered reliable enough for real-time process control of factory equipment).

IBM System/360 Model 65 Computer, 1965 ... Yes, they DID come in colors: blue, yellow, red and gray.
With technology, what you can do influences what you want to do—which gradually expands what you can do. Businesses in the 1950s increasingly recognized computers’ broad potential. They demanded flexible, large-scale machines able to consolidate varied tasks. The workhorse mainframe computers that met these demands in turn reshaped how businesses operate, increasing centralization and nourishing new demand for powerful mainframes.

Mainframe computer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.....We don't really need to go back to typewriters for data security. What we need are more mainframes. The data was not accessible by phone and could not be hacked. A lot of banks still use mainframes which explains why COBOL is still the most dominant computer language.

May 1954...IBM 704 Data Processing System, the world’s first mass produced computer to feature floating point arithmetic hardware. Besides this ultra-geeky distinction, the IBM 704 will leave its mark in computer history before it is discontinued on April 7, 1960. Both the FORTRAN and LISP programming languages were first developed for the IBM 704, as well as the first music application, MUSIC. Physicist John Larry Kelly, Jr. of Bell Labs will synthesize speech for the first time on an IBM 704.
