Landscapes carved on books!

Yes, generally books are printed with more than one copy, it is true. But each and every one of them is deserving of our reverence.

These are beautiful. That cave in the last one is really, really impressive. I'm as big a reader as anyone, but the anthropomorphism of books (as objects, not the stories they contain) is strange.

This is a beautiful waste of good literature.

Using knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer carves one page at a time. Nothing inside the out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books, or dictionaries is relocated or implanted, only removed. Dettmer manipulates the pages and spines to form the shape of his sculptures. He also folds, bends, rolls, and stacks multiple books to create completely original sculptural forms. He currently lives and works in Atlanta, GA.

Alex Queral carves portraits of famous people into phone books. Why didn't I think of that? Einstein is my favorite.
