Le Mékong, qui prend sa source dans les hauteurs de l'Himalaya, traverse la Chine, la Thaïlande, la Birmanie, le Laos, le Cambodge et le Vietnam, avant de terminer sa course dans le delta du même nom, au large des côtes vietnamiennes. Dans ses eaux, vivent des poissons-chats géants (dont un spécimen, pêché en 2005, pesait 293 kg !) et des dauphins d'eau douce.
