The Madonna of Bruges a marble sculpture by Michelangelo of Mary w/ the infant Jesus. by Michelangelo. Jesus stands upright, almost unsupported, only loosely restrained by Mary's right hand, appears to be about to step away from his mother, into the world. Meanwhile, Mary does not cling to her son or even look at him, but gazes down and away, as if she knows already what is to be her son's fate. Side note: one of the 1000 artworks Hitler stole & later "The Monument Men" recovered it. See movie.

Le génie du mal - Lucifer sculpture by Guillaume Geefs. Though the original was destroyed because the church believed women would find themselves attracted to Lucifer, a copy now sits in St. Paul's Cathedral, Liege, Belgium.

Le génie du mal (installed 1848) or The Genius of Evil, known informally in English as Lucifer or The Lucifer of Liège, is a religious sculpture executed in white marble by the Belgian artist Guillaume Geefs. Francophone art historians most often refer to the figure as an ange déchu, a "fallen angel."

Marble fountain attributed to Rudolf Weyr (1847-1914), a leading Viennese sculptor of the late 19th century, the peak period for Viennese Neo-Baroque that began around 1870. Lavish with sculpture, this vogue revisited both the Baroque and Rococo styles. This work presents a synthesis typical of Vienna of the time: a mixture of Rococo and Baroque, of Italian and German motifs.

Here, the figure of the river-God belongs to the Roman Baroque, but the theme of the mermaid is more from the North. Romanticism in the Northern countries brought back to life old myths and characters from the past. It was in the 19th century in Denmark that Hans Christian Andersen wrote The Little Mermaid and that Richard Wagner in Germany honored the German myths in his operas, especially the famous Nixen (nymphs) of the Rhine.
