Pamela Warren, MS, CHN (Certified Holistic & Clinical Nutritionist) answered (3/12/2013) Too much fruit and especially in the form of fruit juice is absolutely not a healthful choice. The fructose (sugar) in fruit is not metabolized the same way that glucose is. High fructose consumption creates imbalances in the body, like excess triglycerides in the blood and fat tissue in the liver. It also does not require the release of a very important hormone called leptin, which is responsible for the feeling of satiety we get when we eat. So, how much fruit is healthful? I suggest whole fruit whenever you choose to have it and up to 3 whole, fresh fruits are fine. Use fruits of a small or medium size and choose from: apple, pears, oranges, bananas. These fruits are easy for everyone to understand a proper serving size. The size of the medium fruit is one serving size. Fruits are best eaten away from your meals, by themselves as snacks. Why? Fruits break down quickly while being eaten and can become "stuck" in the digestive tract behind other foods that take longer to digest. A kind of fermentation takes place and some people get a "sick" feeling from this. Therefore, it's far healthier to eat whole, fresh fruits alone in between meals as snacks. Have a fruit between breakfast and lunch, or between lunch and dinner. This is the best way to regulate the digestion of fruit - and to eat just what the body needs and can tolerate without the risk of overload from too high fructose levels.
