10 Greatest Romance Novels of all time! My favorite author and favorite book written by her
Morning Glory-LaVyrle Spencer - this is my all time favorite book of hers ... Morning Glory is easily one of the top five romances LaVyrle Spencer wrote. It spans two years from 1941-1943. Small town America is still recovering from the Great Depression. America is holding neutrality while helping the Allies in the Second World War by supplying them material aid. It’s about five or six months before Pearl Harbor is attacked officially drawing America into the war.
My mom introduced me to the world of Lavyrle Spencer. Thank you, Mom.

The book discussion we had about Elizabeth Strout's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher in a little town in Maine, was one of the best we ever had. The reading group members were incredibly passionate about their love of the book and their love (and hatred) of Olive. We laughed and cried, and one member called us afterward and asked what we were going to read to get us that riled up again!

Great Book! Book Club Selection. Quotes: “A girl expecting rescue never learns to save herself. Even with the means, she will find her courage wanting.” “Cassandra always hid when she read, though she never quite knew why. It was as if she couldn't shake the guilty suspicion that she was being lazy, that surrendering herself so completely to something so enjoyable must surely be wrong. But surrender she did. Let herself drop through the rabbit hole and into a tale of magic and mystery ...”

She's staying in a creepy old house with her Aunt Claudia, who reads Tarot cards for a living. And at the snooty prep school, a pack of filthy-rich girls treat Rebecca like she's invisible. Only gorgeous, unavailable Anton Grey seems to give Rebecca the time of day, but she wonders if he's got a hidden agenda.
Rebecca is forced to live with her eccentric aunt in New Orleans while her single-parent dad is away on business. Aunt Claudia reads Tarot cards for a living. As a New Yorker, outsider, and niece of a social outcast, Rebecca has a hard time fitting in. The snooty, rich, "Debs" at her private school all snub her. Everyone that is but Anton Grey. Then one night, in Lafayette Cemetery, Rebecca makes a friend... Paula Morris gives an inside look at N.O. seen through the eyes of an outsider.

Set in the ethnic neighborhoods of Seattle during World War II and Japanese American internment camps of the era, this debut novel tells the heartwarming story of widower Henry Lee, his father, and his first love Keiko Okabe.
Brown Bag Book Club Selection, February 26: When artifacts from Japanese families sent to internment camps during World War II are uncovered during renovations at Seattle's Panama Hotel, Henry Lee embarks on a personal quest that leads to memories of growing up Chinese in a city rife with anti-Japanese sentiment and of Keiko, a Japanese girl whose love transcended cultures and generations.
"Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" by Jamie Ford - While "scholarshipping" at the exclusive Rainier Elementary, Henry meets Keiko Okabe, a young Japanese American student. After Keiko and her family are swept up in the evacuations to the internment camps, she and Henry are left only with the hope that the war will end, and that their promise to each other will be kept.
Seattle 1986: the personal posessions of thirty seven Japanese families are found in the basement of the Panama hotel where they have lain forgotten by everyone, except Henry. Seattle, 1942: Henry is "scholarshipping" as the only Chinese-American student at his otherwise all-white middle school when he meets Japanese-American Keiko and the two form a close and unlikely friendship. The Kitchen House. An excellent historical novel. It has been compared to The Help. But, it is a way better read.
Very good book. Our book club rated it 9.2/10. Though it is set in the late 1700s in the South, it feels surprisingly contemporary in the issues it addresses. It is surprising that a Canadian author could write so well about slavery.
