Eloise Wilkin illustrations * When my twin boys were about two years old, they were standing in chairs at the kitchen counter watching me mix a cake. I turned the mixer off and turned away for a split second. Barry placed his little nimble hand into the blades and Brian turned it back ON! I slapped a generous handfull of Crisco onto Barry's hand and it slipped right out...no problem...no worries....except I think i got a few more grey hairs right then...lol njoy

The artwork pushes the Scottish connection and in fact rather dates back to the 'romantic' image of Scotland that the Victorians so loved. The type is also 'Celtic' in places. By the 1930s Macbraynes were to adopt a more rigorous graphic style.

Josephine Baker, an amazing woman, ahead of her time! Dancer, singer, actress, world traveler, activist, WWII spy, and mother of 12 adopted children from all over the world. A beautiful spirit, she embraced all colors, rejected racial segregation and pushed the limits during a time when black women had few options or opportunities.

"PARIS NOIR": More than 115 million African people in 31 francophone African countries speak French. But more importantly the French always welcomed and honored many African American artists who came to perform or visit France to flee from racism.. There are at least three tours in Paris of famous African Americans or of la France Noire (Black France). Ricki Stevenson started Black Paris Tours in 1998 with a focus on Josephine Baker, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Ch
Josephine Baker: Fashion Icon Josephine Baker: The Ultimate Fashion Icon By Shawn G. Hart Josephine Baker is a fashion icon who continues to influence generations of fashionistas and cultural historians. Traditionally as it is used, the word icon describes an individual who is admired and widely celebrated in the public eye. Today, the word is used loosely and often those to whom it is bestowed upon do not live up to the meaning. However, Josephine Baker is the ultimate icon. She reigned supreme from the moment she stepped onto a Paris stage on October 2, 1926. She would later become a triple threat – dancing, singing and acting her way into the spotlight for more than four decades. While Josephine Baker’s accomplishments are many, it is perhaps her fashion panache for which the title of icon is most fitting. Born in St. Louis Missouri in 1906, Baker left the United States in her late teens and became an overnight sensation in Paris after she performed on stage in the “savage dance”. Immediately after the semi-nude performance she appeared in an after-hours club in a gorgeous designer gown. Soon thereafter she was captured by artists, writers and photographers and was reputed to be the most photographed woman of her time. She was a woman that others wanted to imitate because her confidence and her beautiful dark complexion. Josephine Baker also influenced a hairstyle called the Eton Crop which was named after the way she wore her hair. The style was perfect for the cloche hat that was made popular by Josephine and still fashionable today. In the twenties Baker’s image was used to promote a hair pomade called Bakerfix which she created and a suntan lotion called Valaez cream, “so others could have a complexion just like Josephine”. Women admired Josephine Baker because of her confidence and fashion sense. According to an account in Ms. Baker’s adopted son, Jean Claude Baker’s book the Hungry Heart, even Marilyn Monroe was said to have dreamed of going to Paris to become a woman of culture and sophistication under Josephine’s tutelage.” Josephine Baker wore clothes created by the greatest fashion designers of the period, including Paul Poiret, Balenciaga, Chanel and Dior to name a few. One of her favorite passions was to wear matching clothing all the way down to her shoes which were dyed to match her ensemble. Long before Kimora Lee Simmons began collecting Louis Vuitton luggage, Josephine Baker was given hat boxes, shoeboxes, glove boxes, and multiple pieces of luggage all made for her by Louis Vuitton himself. What most people know and some remember about Josephine Baker is her dancing the Charleston while wearing a skirt of bananas. This image is apparent in Mucia Prada’s spring 2011 fashion line. Prada’s line is clearly motivated by the early imagery of Josephine Baker created by famed artist Paul Colin. In the fashion show each model strutted down the runway sporting the marcel curl hairstyle that Baker made famous. One colorful garment was clearly inspired by the Colin image of Baker in the banana skirt. Apart from that beautiful dress, the line features outfits with a motif of monkeys and bananas. Monkeys? Really? This savage imagery is one that Josephine Baker worked hard to separate herself from. She re-invented herself and became a glamorous, sophisticated woman. Did the Devil make Prada do it? If Prada had done just a little more research, she would know that Josephine Baker was also famous for being portrayed in art and photography with her pet cheetah. Josephine would strut down the Champs Elysees in her finery while the cheetah pranced ahead in a diamond choker! Perhaps that animal could have been used in the motif of Prada’s garments. Josephine Baker’s was also a humanitarian. She fought for human rights and made sure that our troops were not segregated wherever she performed. She adopted 12 children of different nationalities to prove that we can all live together in harmony. Having personally witnessed the unveiling of a sculpture of Josephine Baker in the South of France, in 2008, it is evident that the people of France still recognize her humanitarian efforts as well. The beautiful bronze statue depicts Ms. Baker embracing a child and symbolizes her love for her children and all humanity. Today, celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Madonna have begun to follow her model of a unified family by adopting children of different races. It is also not widely known or reported that Josephine Baker was the only woman who spoke at the 1963 March on Washington just before the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After her speech she was acknowledged with one of the greatest ovations she had ever received according to author Stephen Papich in his book titled Remembering Josephine. Josephine Baker’s son Akio and model standing next to the Bronze statue of Ms. Baker in France. Josephine Baker is a beloved icon in Paris. Now she is finally is being widely recognized in the United States. Some examples of this recognition include being honored on July16, 2008 with her own US postage stamp as part of the Black Cinema Series. Elle Magazine named her on their list of “musical fashion mavericks and rock and roll style setters” and People magazine named Josephine Baker as an Elite Style Setter in their 2001 Styles of the Stars issue. When Beyonce performed at the 2008 Fashion Rocks 5th Anniversary, she paid homage to Ms. Baker by wearing her own skirt of bananas and appearing on stage with a bevy of background dancers in the same costume. As a backdrop for Beyonce’s performance several larger than life photographs of Josephine Baker were revealed on stage, exposing a whole new generation to the legendary icon. When he was asked what he thought of Josephine Baker’s style, famous Designer Stephen Burrows provided a personal note which stated in part “More than her sense of style, which was in most cases over-the-top extravagant, she was a very expressive, demonstrative person….she was every bit a style icon.” Glamour magazine named her number three in their list of The seven most Awesome Bad Girls of All Time and TV One named her number one on their list of Most Legendary Sex Symbols of All Time. Most recently a sultry photo of Josephine Baker graced the cover of Jewel magazine. Josephine Baker was an extraordinary woman and is finally getting the recognition she deserves in the U.S. It is wonderful and exciting that a designer such as Mucia Prada would draw inspiration from her. However it is the glamorous, elegant, sophisticated and feminine woman that is most inspirational about Ms Baker and should be promoted and upheld. Contributing writer Shawn G. Hart is currently promoting a new umbrella that features glamorous images of Josephine Baker in costumes from each decade of her life. Ms. Hart has travelled extensively in her research on Josephine Baker and completed her Master of Fine Arts degree at Howard University, Wash. D.C with her thesis titled: Josephine Baker: Creating an American Icon Through a Framework of Social Identity Theory. Check out www.bakerbyshawn.com
