Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers
Great On Screen Couple: Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, dancing and singing numbers were a bright spot for many movie goers during the Great Depression. Their cheerful plots and wonderful characters, were showcased in beautiful Art Deco sets and supported with the most talented performers of the era. Astaire and Roger's magic, still continues today for many classic movie fans. When Astaire and Rogers take the floor for the dance number called, Carioca in the film, Flying Down to Rio (1933), it was clear to see why the most famous dance team in the movies became so popular. Even though, they were amazing dance team things did not start out as smooth as you might think, Fred Astaire really did not want make a second movie with Ginger. Even though Astaire said, "I don't mind making another picture with Ginger, but as for this team idea, it's out! I've just managed to live down one partnership(his sister Adele pictured below) and I don't want to be bothered with any more." But after the film received such high reviews, Astaire changed his mind and he and Rogers, became known as "The King and Queen of the Carioca". Soon after, Fred and Ginger landed their first starring movie rolls in the film, The Gay Divorcee (1934). Where they showcased their amazing talents in the musical number "The Continental" which lasted 17 1/2 minutes. The dancers, had a huge argument over Ginger's costume in the film, Top Hat(1935). Ginger Rogers, wanted to wear the blue dress decorated with ostrich feathers for the "Cheek to Cheek" number. When director Mark Sandrich and Fred Astaire saw the dress, they wanted Rogers wear the white gown she had worn in, The Gay Divorcee. Rogers walked off the set, only returning when Sandrich agreed to let her wear the blue dress. During filming, the feathers started coming off the dress. Astaire later claimed it was like "a chicken being attacked by a coyote". Astaire, wanted to put the situation behind them and gave Rogers a locket of a gold feather. This was how Gingers became nicknamed "Feathers". Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, had a romantic screen teaming like no other dance team.

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers: "Never Gonna Dance" from Swing Time/imho the BEST dance ever filmed
Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in Swing Time. Oh to dance with the master
Fred Astaire (Lucky), Ginger Rogers (Penny), Victor Moore (Pop Cardetti), Helen Broderick (Mabel Anderson) Directed by George Stevens (Shane) IMDB: A performer and gambler travels to New York City to raise the $25,000 he needs to marry his fiancée, only to become entangled with a beautiful aspiring dancer. This week I'm doing reviews for the five old movies I watched earlier this spring in what felt like a single sitting. AMC featured Ginger Rogers as their star of the month, which meant a bazillion Fred & Ginger movies on my DVR. I was also wrapping up a proposal for my WWII romance, so I was also in the mood for Bing Crosby. Swing Time is my favorite (so far) Fred & Ginger pairing, with tremendous caveats. I like these characters best, with Astaire playing a genuinely likable and happy-go-lucky chap. He was cavalier and dashing, without the least little bit of rancor. Rogers played Penny as a sensible young woman who becomes swept up in the charisma of this skinny stranger, but never did I get the sense that she lost sight of who she was. They fit so well together. The dance numbers were also incredible, particularly their first duet of the picture, which takes place inside a dance studio. Lucky wants to help Penny keep her job by demonstrating how much she'd "taught" him in just one short lesson. The result is, of course, both comedic and astounding. The "Bojangles of Harlem" number gets a lot of attention because of its use of blackface, and of course because of Astaire's virtuoso dancing. For my money, however, I couldn't stop re-watching when Fred and Penny say goodbye to one another, both of them engaged to other people. Astaire puts aside his sunny disposition and cheeky humor to dig deep for genuine sincerity. The result is incredibly sexy--the jester who needs to be taken seriously, if just once. The pair then moves into one of their best ever duets, "Never Gonna Dance," which is frustratingly not available on YouTube. WTH? But seriously, just look at the sexy: The driving force of the plot, however, rested on whether or not tuxedo trousers should be cuffed. Okay. Everyone laughs a great deal during the last five minutes of the film, which even had the kids asking, "Why won't they stop laughing?" Thus for likable characters and mesmerizing dance numbers, Swing Time is the best. Just don't ask much of the conflict that keeps them apart or the resolution that brings them together.
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in Top Hat (Mark Sandrich, 1935)
In honor of Ginger Rogers being TCM's star of the month (which makes me realize that perhaps I should have done female dancers first?), today's fashion spotlight will showcase one of the lovely lady's costumes. Just as I have many favorite Fred and Ginger movies, I also have many favorite Ginger costumes. But, for now, I'll just talk about one of my all-time favorites: the dress Ginger wears in Swing Time for the "Never Gonna Dance" number. I love this song, this dance, and the dress is simply exquisite. I found a whole bunch of really great photos and I just couldn't narrow it down to two or three so I decided to put them all up here. this way you can see the front, the back, and how the dress falls when she dances (which is really cool!), oh! and there's also a really neat promo shot with the dress, featuring the cape! The name of that last photo was "Ginger Rogers Majestic." I thought all you Ginger fans out there would enjoy knowing that! I hope these photos have whetted your appetite to see this dress in the film. The photo of the back of the dress makes me want to stop writing and go watch the dance right now! (maybe I will....) Unfortunately, the dance isn't on YouTube but here's the really cute scene where Lucky (Astaire) compliments Penny's (Rogers) dress. And if you haven't already, you really should go watch the movie in its entirety. It's really cute. Unfortunately this post will have just missed TCM's Ginger night, but it's worth renting or getting from the library.
